Harold George Belafonte, born in 1927 in Harlem (New York), Jamaican descent, is known as the 'King of Calypso', because to the great popularity that gave his particular genre during the 50's and beyond. It's definitely a complete artist (singer, actor and television producer), and a declared and recognized social activist. This compilation album about his work, published in 1990, contains 11 of his most successful Caribbean music and Calypso hits (Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica).
His greatest achievement is "Day-O" or "Banana Boat Song'. This version of the Jamaican folk song 'Day Dah', mixed with another popular piece ('Hill and Gully Rider'), was published by Belafonte in their production 'Calypso' in 1956, which was the first LP to sell more than 1 million copies. All tracks on the album are almost universally known ('Jamaica Farewell', 'Matilda', 'Coconut Woman ', etc.). But we also dare to point out their versions of 'Island in the sun' or 'Kingston Market.
