Diely Moussa Kouyate has spent a large part of his life in the shadows, putting his guitar skills at the service of other people’s songs. But on his latest release, Le Temps, Kouyate indulges in a spot of spectacular role reversal, inviting the celebrity vocalists he has accompanied in the studio or live on stage to guest on his new album. What’s more, Mory Kante, Salif Keita, Kante Manfila, Abdoulaye Diabate and Mamani Keita, who all gave positive responses to Kouyate’s request, were apparently delighted to make their loyal guitarist’s long-held dream of recording an album together come true.

"What happened was I took care of the music and then asked them to come along and sing their own lyrics over the top," explains Kouyate, who insists he is as much Guinean (in terms of nationality and origins) as he is Malian (Mali being where he grew up). When he works on his compositions, the guitarist says, he often hums out a melody, "even if I’m way off-key." But in the course of his long, globe-trotting career, Kouyate has never dared step behind the microphone himself. “My mother was a very good singer,” he says, “but I don’t know why, I just got it into my head that I wouldn’t be any good at singing. In my family, we can play just about any instrument you put in front of us, but we can’t sing!" Following in the revered footsteps of his musician father (who was a member of L’Ensemble instrumental du Mali, as was his mother), Diely Moussa preferred to express his musical talent via his guitar strings, like his elder brother, Kemo, who accompanied the legendary South African diva Miriam Makeba for many years.

Before Diely Moussa started strumming his guitar, though, he honed his musical skills on the balafon. “My uncle, my mother’s younger brother, was a great balafon-player,” he says, “After school, I’d often go round to his place and sit and play with his instrument while he sang.” The balafon, a traditional xylophone from West Africa has, in fact, been in the Kouyate family for over eighty generations. And Diely Moussa pays tribute to the history of his famous family of griots in the six-minute track that brings Le Temps to an end, recounting the glories of the Manding empire and its sovereign-heroes, Soundjata Keita and Soumaoro Kante.

"It was our ancestor who ended up playing Soumaoro Kante’s balafon that no-one was allowed to touch.* Soumaoro was thousands of miles away at the time, but he recognised the sound of his instrument and he changed himself into another form and flew home in the wind… My ancestor was not afraid, though, he carried right on playing and began singing the praises of the brave Soumaoro who bequeathed his balafon to him." Kouyate’s griot ancestor continued his role as historian and personal adviser to Salif Keita’s ancestor, Soundjata Keita, after the latter succeeded Soumaoro Kante on the Manding throne. And eight centuries on, traces of the special relationship the Kouyates and the Keitas established between their family clans remain. When Diely Moussa accompanies Salif Keita on tour, the guitarist says, he is charged with the mission of going off stage at the end of each concert and persuading the singer to return for an encore. "And you know what?" says the guitarist, with a certain hint of pride, "he always listens to me!"

The Rail Band

Diely Moussa Kouyate and Salif Keita share another lineage, this time a musical one, both having been affiliated to Mali’s legendary Rail Band in the 1970s (albeit not at the same time). Kouyate actually joined the ranks of the Rail Band two months after Keita quit the group to join their arch rivals, Les Ambassadeurs du Motel. Keita was replaced on vocals by Mory Kante, the Rail Band’s former balafon-player. Then shortly afterwards guitarist Ousmane Sogodogo also quit, leaving a vacancy in that position. It was the Rail Band’s bassist, Cheik Traoré, who suggested recruiting Diely Moussa who had made a name for himself on guitar accompanying the singer Kasse Mady Diabate with the local orchestra from Kangaba (a town near the Guinean border).

The young guitarist leapt on the offer, knowing this was the chance of a lifetime. The only problem was, when Diely Moussa turned up in Bamako that fateful Thursday morning, he was presented with his stage outfit, a handful of cash and informed that he would be playing live on stage with the Rail Band the following night. Oh, and there was to be no rehearsal before the concert - staged in the local stadium, no less! Diely Moussa assumed his baptism of fire in style, safe in the knowledge that "I had learnt the entire Rail Band repertoire listening to their songs on the radio. But of course they didn’t know that at the time!"

Kouyate not only surprised his fellow musicians live on stage the following night, his performance also went down well with the crowd and he officially joined the Rail Band playing alongside Djelimady Tounkara, whom he describes as "the best guitarist in West Africa." The guitarists’ different playing styles complemented one another to perfection, each of them bringing their own specific touch to the Rail Band’s sound. “When I was with the Rail Band, people who came to the concerts often thought there was a balafon,” Kouyate says, “But, in reality, everything I do on the guitar is essentially balafon notes.” And what else would you expect when the balafon has been in his family genes for more than eighty generations?

*Legend has it that anyone who handled the instrument risked being killed on the spot.
