Tangerine Tree was a project from 2002 through 2006 that was dedicated to the collection, preservation and distribution of unreleased concerts and other audio material by the band Tangerine Dream. The creators of the Tangerine Tree project received permission from Tangerine Dream to release the collection on a strict non-profit basis. Several of the Tangerine Tree volumes have been used as the basis for official Tangerine Dream releases. The project collected just under 300 hours of material (291:39:26).

Material was collected from audience recordings, soundboard recordings, recordings of radio and TV transmissions and in some cases the purchase of studio masters. Only recordings of a high quality and a unique nature were considered for the core Tangerine Tree volumes. These recordings were professionally re-mastered and released on CD-R and accompanied by high quality artwork for the CD labels and case liners.

Notes
The first bunch of Tangerine Tree (consisting of volumes 1 to 8) was opened with a great audience recording of the Nottingham concert of November 8th, 1976, being part of TD's extensive UK tour in autumn 1976. The sound quality is excellent – in fact this is one of the best sounding TD audience recordings of the seventies. The third track was taken from the bootleg Collected Endings, that had heavy problems with the source tape: Because of the tape recorder running out of power during the concert, the recorded music became faster and faster when playing the tape with correct speed. This flaw was corrected during the remastering for Tangerine Tree Volume 1: Nottingham 1976, thus this CD presents the almost complete concert in a previously unheard sound quality.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 2: Sheffield 1974 presents the only good sounding audience recording from TD's first British 1974 tour. Still very experimental and calm, it is of interest for those who also like the non-sequenced music of Tangerine Dream.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 3: Bernau 2001 presents the premiere concert of TD's Inferno, performed in a church in the German town of Bernau (near Berlin). Inferno is the first of a three part composition inspired by the Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy) by Dante Alighieri. The Tangerine Tree release presented the music shortly before is was officially released on CD in March 2002 on the TDI label as Inferno; thus the tracks were untitled on this release and differed in length and number from the official release. The track listing above shows the titles and track lengths of a corrected re-indexed version. The material on this record is rather identical to the music officially released as Inferno, though some slight overdubs have been obviously made for that release. Each TD fan is encouraged to listen to the official CD to compare these two versions. The music on this CD was mastered from a minidisc audience recording; thus the sound quality is very good.

Notes
For anyone who likes TD's classic double live album Encore (1977), Tangerine Tree Volume 4: Washington 1977 is absolutely essential. This performance from TD's 1977 North American tour in Washington on April 4th got broadcasted on radio and was released on this 2 disc release including the complete radio announcements plus 97 minutes of music in an overall very good sound quality. Like the other shows of this tour, the Washington performance included Cherokee Lane and Monolight in variations slightly different from the official release, plus other tracks which were more or less improvised and stayed officially unreleased so far.

Musician(s) Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Johannes Schmoelling

Notes
Before leaving for their tour of Japan in June 1983, TD played a concert to commemorate the death of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. They played on June 11th at the Alte Oper (the Old Opera House) in Frankfurt, Germany. A prolific director, writer and actor, Fassbinder had been one of the most controversial German filmmakers. The concert lasted only about 35 minutes and is featured on Tangerine Tree Volume 5: Frankfurt 1983 in completeness as an audience recording of very good sound quality. It consists of alternative versions of compositions that have been released on the live albums Logos Live (1982) and Poland (1984), plus one track from Edgar Froese's solo soundtrack album Kamikaze 1989 (1982), here in an embellished version with an additional harplike voice. Fassbinder was main actor in the movie Edgar Froese wrote this track for, thus this was a well-fitting finale for this memorial concert. It has never again been performed live by Tangerine Dream.

Musician(s) Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Peter Baumann

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 6: Bilbao 1976 presents a concert that took place in the Spanish city of Bilbao as part of Tangerine Dream's European tour in Winter 1976. Like the other gigs of this time period the concert was improvised for the most part, including some themes known from studio albums and other concerts of that time. The sound quality of this release is not as excellent as of most other volumes of Tangerine Tree, because it was not specially remastered for this release; thus there are several drop-outs. Nevertheless this volume is a good example for concerts of 1976, a year which is supposed by many fans to be Tangerine Dream's creative peak.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 7: Croydon 1975 features the remastered first generation audience recording of the 1975 concert in Croydon, England. Large parts of this concert were used for Ricochet, Part Two. The first 20 minute long track sounds remarkably like the intro of Ricochet, Part One, but soon develops into a completely new composition. Anyone who loves Ricochet (1975) will find this recording unmissable.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 8: Berlin 1976 features a remastered and superb sounding FM broadcast recording of the famous performance at the Berlin Philharmonics which was used for the official TDI album Soundmill Navigator (released 2000). But this one is the real concert as it was performed, without any overdubs or added sounds like on the official release.

Composer(s) Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Michael Hoenig
Musician(s) Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Michael Hoenig

Notes
Tangerine Tree II (consisting of volumes 9 to 16) was opened with a complete double CD version of the famous London Royal Albert Hall concert of April 2nd, 1975, that had been broadcast by the BBC radio. The sound quality is nearly perfect, as it was mastered straight from the original BBC tape, plus it has the missing "finale" from the first set, taken from a first generation audience recording. This release is unique in terms of the fact that it features one of the very few concerts where Michael Hoenig replaced the absent Peter Baumann. Musically it isn't a million miles away from Rubycon (1975), and thus Tangerine Tree Volume 9: London 1975 is a superb companion to that official studio album.

Notes
While Tangerine Tree I was somewhat focused on the mid-seventies, the second part, consisting of Volumes 9 to 16, features, among others, three complete concerts of 1981/1982. The first one, as Tangerine Tree Volume 10: Newcastle 1981, was part of the 1981 British Isles tour that took place between October 15th and 29th and included 15 concerts. In comparision to the European tour in January/February of the same year (see Tangerine Tree Volume 14: Paris 1981) the set was nearly totally rewritten. Only the last twenty minutes of the first set had survived, now being the closing part of the second main set, having the opening minute of Remote Viewing inserted before Force Majeure. The second set opened with an extended version of Mojave Plan from the forthcoming album White Eagle (1982), at the time unreleased. The first set consisted of completely new material, most of it still officially unreleased. Surprisingly, from today's view, with the exception of the short excerpt from Remote Viewing only the two encores Kiew Mission and Choronzon (the latter in a drastically extended version) were taken from the then current studio album Exit (1981).

Composer(s) Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Steve Jolliffe
Musician(s) Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Steve Jolliffe, Klaus Krüger

Notes
The 1978 studio release Cyclone was a somewhat controversial album with its use of vocals by Steve Jolliffe. But it also had its good moments, and on the European 1978 tour there were a few remarkable performances. One of these events, the gig at the Audimax in Hamburg, is presented on Tangerine Tree Volume 11: Hamburg 1978. Up to now no complete recording of this show has appeared among collectors, thus this release features the second set and the encore of this concert only. There is no sign of Bent Cold Sidewalk or Rising Runner Missed By Endless Sender here, but parts of Madrigal Meridian can be heard during this widely improvised gig.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 12: Croydon 1982 presents the Croydon concert of 1982, being part of the European tour that took place between October 17th and November 25th, 1982. During this tour Tangerine Dream's famous concert at the London Dominion Theatre was recorded and released as Logos Live in the same year. That album became one of the most-loved live recordings among TD fans, but only the opening of the first set and the major part of the second set plus one of the three encores made it to the record. One possible reason for this might be that much of the unreleased material was used for the soundtrack music of the movie The Keep that was planned to be released in 1983, while other material, like the excerpt of Mojave Plan and the two encores White Eagle and Midnight In Tula, had already been released on the studio album White Eagle (1982). The Croydon concert now is a complete audience recording of very good sound quality, specially remastered for release as most of the other volumes of Tangerine Tree. The London concert mentioned above was later released as Tangerine Leaves Volume 1: London 1982.
