Anthology - The Tangerine Dream Collection Part 3 of 8 (1984 to 1989)
Electronica / Krautrock | MP3@192kbps-320kbps | Artwork included
119 albums and growing | studio/soundtrack/concert | 1.15 GB

Without doubt, the recordings of Tangerine Dream have made the greatest impact on the widest variety of instrumental music during the 1980s and '90s, ranging from the most atmospheric new age and space music to the harshest abrasions of electronic dance. Founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese in Berlin, the group has progressed through a full three dozen lineups (Froese being the only continuous member with staying power) and four distinct stages of development: the experimentalist minimalism of the late '60s and early '70s; stark sequencer trance during the mid- to late '70s, the group's most influential period; an organic form of instrumental music on their frequent film and studio work during the 1980s; and, finally, a more propulsive dance style, which showed Tangerine Dream with a sound quite similar to their electronic inheritors in the field of dance music.

This anthology is the most complete (and of course, the largest) collection of TD albums that is roaming the net these days. Together with the "Tangerine Tree"-collection, it contains more then 200 albums from five decades! Nevertheless, there are better-quality versions of some of these albums floating around, especially here on AvaxHome, the place for high quality music. Those of you, who can tell the difference between 192kbps and 256 kbps or between 320kbps and FLAC, you may like to regard this collection as a basis and upgrade your archive from time to time with better bitrate versions if and when they're available. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the work and art of Tangerine Dream as much, as I do.

Notes
In 1991 the soundtrack music of the film The Park Is Mine, starring Tommy Lee Jones, was released for the first time on CD. It had been composed back in 1985 by TD with the line-up Edgar Froese, Chris Franke and Johannes Schmoelling.

As stated on the CD insert, the recording was prepared for release without the cooperation of TD. Thus it could not be mastered using the original master tapes by TD but two-track stereo tapes used for the film. This resulted in a sound quality not as excellent as TD listeners are used to. The CD booklet has liner notes, titled "T Dreaming In Toronto Park", by Matt Hargreaves, co-author of the printed TD discography Voices In The Dunes.

Notes
Accompanying the live album Poland, in 1984 Warsaw In The Sun was released as a 12" and 7" vinyl single, the later being released in the UK as a shape single, too. The track listing featured four new track titles, but in fact the compositions Polish Dance and Rare Bird are only excerpts from the album track Tangent, while the three versions of Warsaw In The Sun are non-album remixes of one and the same excerpt from the track Barbakane.

Notes
In 1985, Tangerine Dream wrote the music for Heartbreakers, photographed by Michael Ballhaus and directed by Bobby Roth, starring Peter Coyote, Nick Mancuso and Carole Laure. It was the first of six movies directed by Bobby Roth that Tangerine Dream supplied the music for.

The soundtrack album was released only in Germany by Virgin in summer 1985 and became one of the rarest items for TD collectors after it went out of print a few years later. If there was a prize for the most tasteful record cover, the re-release of Heartbreakers by the Silva Screen label in 1995 probably would not win it. But this was the only disadvantage of that reissue - the more important thing is: Silva Screen had done a good job by making this soundtrack available after the Virgin CD had become exorbitantly expensive.

Notes
"The world, indeed, is like a dream and the treasures of the world are an alluring mirage. Like the apparent distances in a picture, things have no reality in themselves but are like a heat haze."
- Buddha

The 1985 album Le Parc was the last official studio release with Johannes Schmoelling, who left Tangerine Dream in October 1985. In another way, too, Le Parc was a turning point in the musical history of Tangerine Dream: the much-beloved atmospheric or 'spacey' 20-minute long epics had gone in favour of nine quite short titles, the longest clocking in at barely over six minutes. Edgar Froese in an interview with Jonathan Miller: "Tangerine Dream is like breathing - the first 12 or 13 years was breathing out and the other decade is breathing in. The simple concept is the inside and outside world. It's more complicated if you go into it, but breathing in means that by the natural aspect of breathing, it's inside and not spacey. It's not macrocosm, it's microcosm."

Edgar Froese has been quoted as saying, "I look at our compositions as travel music, adventure music, much of which has been inspired by the places we've visited over the years." And in fact, Le Parc was inspired by nine parks and gardens around the world. On this album the TD trio was supported by three guest musicians - including Clare Torry, who also sang on Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon back in 1973.

Notes
The third issue in the "Tangerine Dream Classics Edition" was Antique Dreams, a collection or rare and unreleased material from the seventies and eighties, first announced in 1998 and released in the summer of 2000. All material was available on an official CD for the first time ever.

Back in 1974 TD had written the music for the theatrical play Oedipus Tyrannus by Sophocles. The planned album containing this music has never been released, only the Overture had been released on the Virgin sampler album V (1974). The version of this composition on Antique Dreams is shortened by more than five minutes compared to the original release, and some new sounds have been added.

Ultima Thule, Part One, the second track on this CD, is the A-side of the first TD single Ultima Thule (1971). The B-side track Ultima Thule, Part Two has not been re-released on an official TD album yet.

Sorcerer And Thief is a live medley of the composition Betrayal (Sorcerer Theme) from Sorcerer (1977) and material reminding of Diamond Diary from Thief (1981). The booklet states that this track was recorded at the Mill Valley Film Festival back in 1981; nevertheless it is more likely that it was recorded at the Festival in 1986, and TD played it also on the Berlin Reichstag concert in 1987 and during the 1990 UK tour.

The booklet states that Southend Mall was intended for release on TD's album Le Parc (1985), but it has not much in common with the compositions of that album. In fact, it is a solo production by Edgar Froese and is more similar to the material of his solo album Beyond The Storm (1995) or the solo material on the fifth CD of the boxed set Tangents (1994).

Cool Breeze Of Brighton was another previously unreleased composition, recorded live during the 1986 UK tour, while Phaedra Of Nottingham is a 1988 live version of the classic TD composition from 1974. The booklet tells that this track was recorded in Nottingham (hence the title) in 1990, and in fact Phaedra was performed at that gig, but it was not followed by Livemiles, Part One (The Albuquerque Concert), that is clearly recognisable at the end of this track, making it obvious that it was recorded during the 1988 US tour instead.

House Of The Rising Sun, the closing title of this CD, was originally released on the 7" flexi disk House Of The Rising Sun (1989) as part of the US Reflex Magazine. Besides its rarity, this track is exceptional for at least two reasons: First, this track is one of the very few official recordings featuring the short time TD member Ralf Wadephul, and second, this is one of the very few compositions not written by a TD member; it was originally performed by The Animals and arranged and performed by TD during their 1988 US tour as an encore.

Especially the previously unreleased live material makes Antique Dreams an album coming up to the expectations some TD fans had back in 1998 when the CD Dream Encores was announced, but later turned out to be a collection of mostly rare studio tracks.

Though the official release date of Antique Dreams was July 3rd, 2000, some copies were available about two or three weeks before.

Notes
The last TD production with Johannes Schmoelling was the soundtrack for Ridley Scott's movie Legend, starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Currie and David Bennent. Jerry Goldsmith was the original composer of the music for Legend, but Universal Studios decided they wanted a more modern sounding music and contracted with TD, Jon Anderson (singer of Yes) and Bryan Ferry (formerly with Roxy Music) to supply new music. The TD score was used for the North American version of the film only, thus the TD soundtrack was released 1986 in USA and Canada only. All other world-wide releases used the Goldsmith film score.

In an interview Ridley Scott remembered: "I made a terrible mistake with the score. Jerry Goldsmith's original score was by far the most relevant. But after some really not very good previews I decided that maybe the film was too sweet. So I tried to adjust that for America. And I went to Tangerine Dream, God bless them, who wrote a score in three-and-a-half weeks in Berlin. For the rest of the world I kept the Goldsmith score."

While the initial cut of the film ran over two hour long, the European version was cut to 94 minutes, while the American version was even less complex and had a length of only 89 minutes.

Scott in another interview: "I got totally paranoid, I started to hack away at the movie. … I figured that maybe we'd been too adventurous with our expectations of a full-blown fairy story, and therefore, maybe the combination of the score and the visual was actually too sweet. So, with only three weeks to redo a score, I went to Berlin and did the score with Tangerine Dream. In three weeks they did an incredible job, but it was completely different. It was a driving, more modern way to go, and given what they did in the time, I thought they did a fantastic job."

In 1990, a British mail order record shop offered "a strictly limited quantity of a special edition, studio quality live TD LP from their 1986 tour…" for 10 Pounds. Those lucky enough to win the "first come, first served" race found Parisian Dreams in their postbox, an excellent, professionally remixed recording of their concert at Paris Olympique in March 1986. It comes with a simple insert cover (different colours have been seen), some copies are numbered, but no quantity is specified. The second part of this concert followed a few weeks later in a similar shape as Parisian Dreams Too.

Notes
"You can produce the sound of two hands clapping. Now, how does one hand sound?"
- Zen question

Shortly after Johannes Schmoelling had left TD, friends of Edgar Froese pointed out a keyboard player who was earning his daily bread in the Vienna jazz club scene: Paul Haslinger, who was only 23 when Edgar Froese invited him to join a studio session in Vienna along with Chris Franke. At first it didn't appear likely that Paul - who was mainly a funk jazz pianist - could replace Johannes. TD was a completely different musical concept for Paul and it meant a lot of hard work before he could musically orientate himself for the spring 1986 UK and USA tours. Paul was used to working hard and Edgar and Chris were patient, so that both tours were successfully completed, and Paul became a regular member for the next four years. The first album featuring Paul Haslinger was Underwater Sunlight, released in summer 1986.

As Haslinger recalls, "I came to Tangerine Dream's Berlin studio and there were all the instruments I'd ever dreamed of. You didn't see me for a year because I was always behind them, working out things. Since Underwater Sunlight was the first album I was involved in, it was also the most spontaneous one - at least from my perspective. After completing the '86 UK tour, we went straight back into the studio and recorded it in little more than three months. It happened with ease and I think you can hear that in the music." For his part, Haslinger admirably conceded, "I don't think Tangerine Dream was changed by me. The mastermind and leader has always been Edgar."

Notes
In 1987 TD supplied part of the music for the movie Three O'Clock High. The soundtrack album was released in the same year, but obviously without any cooperation with TD. Thus the TD material featured on the album consists mostly of short musical cuts and appears besides seven tracks being no TD material at all. The running times printed on the CD cover are wrong in most cases and differ from the real running times listed above. In Germany the film was released with the title Faustrecht, and the soundtrack appears under this name in some mail order catalogues. Nevertheless this is the same CD as Three O'Clock High.

"Look at the fingers of your hands if you want to know how things that are different can be the same."
- Mikhail Naimy

TD's 1987 studio album for Jive Electro, Tyger, was surprising, as once again it featured vocals, this time sung by guest artist Jocelyn Bernadette Smith from New York who joined composers Edgar Froese, Chris Franke and Paul Haslinger in Vienna and Berlin in February 1987 to transform a series of poems by the English mystic and painter William Blake (1757 - 1827) into songs. This project was mainly an idea by Edgar Froese: "My interests in philosophy lead me to William Blake, whom I've admired for about 20 years as one of the greatest writers in the English language – apart from Shakespeare. I myself had a problem with Jocelyn during the recording. She'd already got through the texts, but during the session she took the book and smashed it on the floor, saying, 'I'm an R & B singer and I don't want to do this schoolkid bullshit!' I still think she did a fairly good job, but she hated the lyrics, which are not easy to understand if you don't know the background. It helps to know what Britain was all about when Blake wrote the story. It was an empire and his words were partly political, social and esoteric at the same time. If you don't comprehend this then you may have a problem interpreting it correctly. Even my colleagues didn't understand, so I don't blame Jocelyn or anybody else. The recording session was very hard work, but it was my baby and I take full responsibility for that record.'

In fact, using vocals once again after their previous experiment with Steve Jolliffe on Cyclone back in 1978 started discussions among TD fans. Many of them disliked the presence of Jocelyn Bernadette Smith's vocals and regarded the highly melodic nature of Tyger as further evidence of TD's decline into commerciality. Paul Haslinger later about Tyger: "This project was shaped by our desire for another attempt at vocals. I think we were successful in avoiding the norm, but overall we – or at least I – didn't understand enough about the singer's perspective to make it really work."

Monika Froese's cover artwork of the 1987 album releases would later become TD's official logo in the 90's. The CD versions included the two-part composition 21st Century Common Man that was not featured on the LP releases.

Notes
The 1988 album Livemiles was the last one appearing on the Jive Electro label - the 'Blue Years' had ended. Another change was the departure of Chris Franke, leaving TD after 16 years immediately after the open air concert in Berlin on August 1st, 1987.

Only a 27 minute long remixed excerpt of this concert is featured on this album as Livemiles, Part Two, while the full length concert of more than two hours was made available on the fan release Tangerine Tree Volume 38: Berlin 1987, taken from a radio broadcast.

The composition Livemiles, Part One is alleged to be a live performance in Albuquerque from June 1986. Fan tapes prove that this is not true: None of the material featured on this record was performed at that time and place. It seems to be a pure studio production, though a part of it was played live during the US tour in 1988 (months after release of the album Livemiles). An original version of the material performed live during the 1986 US tour can be heard on Vault IV, though it comes from the venue at Cleveland, about two weeks after the gig of Albuquerque.

Notes
"The visible creates a work in form - the invisible defines its worth"
- Lao Tse - Tao Te King

After Chris Franke had left the group and the contract with Jive Electro had come to an end, the remaining duo of Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger signed with the Los Angeles-based Private Music label that had been founded back in 1985 by former TD member Peter Baumann. 'The Melrose Years' had begun. The first album released by Private Music was Optical Race in 1988. The sleeves of some of the releases featured a figure die-cut out on the front and a small square die-cut out on the rear side. Together with the multi-coloured paper insert this led to a very special effect.

To promote the album, TD performed an extensive US tour in August/September 1988, and it is a pity that this material has not been released officially. Nevertheless, average audience recordings and soundboards recordings of very high quality exist and have been released as bootleg recordings, e.g. Spherical Harmonics One.

Notes
The movie Shy People, starring Jill Clayburgh and Barbara Hershey, tells of a New York journalist, who sets off with her daughter for the swamplands of Louisiana with the intention of writing an article for the New York Times. There she finds a widow in extreme poverty, living with her two sons and a daughter in nearly stone age conditions. The film shows the collision of the modern American way of life with the behaviour patterns of a lifestyle rooted in nature. Both families become enmeshed in situations which are completely foreign to their normal way of life. The often mysterious, mystical world of the wide, misty swamp landscape creates a fantastic setting.

Tangerine Dream composed and produced the music in 1987 in Berlin. The movie director, Andrei Konchalovsky, had achieved world-wide recognition with his previous film, "Runaway Train". In his new film he wanted to create an extra dimension through the music, for this would make his visuals more dynamic. What began for TD as a typical assignment then became a very complex and time consuming engagement - the lengthiest of any of their works up to that time: composing and producing 84 minutes of music took two months.

Konchalovsky, himself a classically trained musician and conductor, placed the highest level of requirements on the technique and imagination of the musicians. A full workday from 9 a.m. until 1 a.m. in the night was not unusual. Just before the completition the director decided to allow TD to write the title music with only four days remained available until the music was required for the final mixing in Los Angeles. In a last ditch effort the band dispersed and hunted through various studios, agencies and addresses to come up with Jacquie Virgil, a black American singer who was able to optimally interpret the lyrics and music they had created. With no more than three hours remaining before his flight, Konchalovsky had the finished masters in his hands.
