Anthology box set containing 7 hard-to-find and critically acclaimed albums, released on labels such as Cantil, Opal and All Saints. What can you say about ambient music? It's quiet … It's ethereal … It's meditative … It's minimal … It's passive … but it's also important! And Harold Budd is - in my opinion - right up there with Brian Eno when it comes to this particular genre of musical fields. I don't know who thought up the idea of releasing a boxed set of Harold Budd material, but God love you for doing it!! This is a true "must-have" for any Budd enthusiast who likes beautiful background music playing low while working on the computer (either at home or at work) or for also doing what I consider "low-noise household chores."

I eagerly ordered this item once I realized it was available and am so glad I did. Being an avid admirer of ambient music and passive listening, I play this boxed set all the time. I truly love it and personally think that it belongs in every music-lover's collection. So do yourselves a favor here, folks. Buy this!! Support Mr. Budd all you can and enjoy the aural benefits of your efforts. You won't be disappointed.

CD1 - The Serpent (In Quicksilver) (1981)

The Serpent is very much in line with the piano-driven, synth-saturated ambient music for which he'd eventually become known. The Serpent (In Quicksilver) features short but incisive piano meditations with carefully layered electronic washes and bursts of pedal steel guitar, conjuring mental images of Budd's desert upbringing.

Abandoned Cities stands in stark contrast to Budd’s sun-splashed solo works, letting his numb piano notes hang in the balance over leering synth lines and Eugene Bowen’s restrained riffs. In many ways, these two side-long pieces could be considered ashen counterparts to (No Pussyfooting), the immersive guitar-and-tape-loops session Eno cut with Robert Fripp a decade earlier. Only this is the part where the storm isn’t just approaching; it’s already here.

CD3 - The White Arcades (1987)

On the short-lived moment when Warner Bros. was distributing Opal records, this Harold Budd album probably reached more people than his previous work combined. One can hope so, at least. This album shows Budd at his most stylistically pure: nine pieces that rarely shift from their piano and synth instrumentation, all treated with much echo and coloration. Budd is after beauty, not menace, but with the mystery that follows it. From the pulse of "Coyote" to the grand thunder and rolling clouds of "Balthus Bemused By Color," this is a solid album, one for thinking, studying, or whatever one does when the ambient comes.

CD4 - By The Dawn’s Early Light (1991)

Harold Budd's discs tend to end up in the new age section of the record store, because his music is generally pleasant, quiet, and soothing. But where most new age composers go for the obvious (and sometimes saccharine) melody, Budd veers off into ambiguity; he also lacks the mystical bent that often goes along with the new age style. Instead, his compositional voice is more like that of a detached observer – one who creates beauty without getting too involved with it. By the Dawn's Early Light finds Budd writing for various combinations of viola, guitar, harp, and keyboards. All of the music is lovely, but not all of the compositions sound complete. In several cases, they sound like raw ideas rushed into the studio before their time. Guitarist Bill Nelson provides much of the interest throughout the album, and the sighing, slithery viola of Mabel Wong lends an occasional turn-of-the-century salon feel to the proceedings. The only really embarrassing moments occur when Budd – whose voice sounds like an unfortunate cross between Garrison Keillor and Kermit the Frog – reads his own poetry. Skip those tracks and you'll be fine.

Harold Budd has been a principal figure in the Californian avant garde since the early 1960s. His latest release, Music For 3 Pianos, is the result of a long-standing friendship with fellow Americans Daniel Lentz and Ruben Garcia. Inspired by Morton Feldman's multi-piano pieces, the trio continues to explore the space between music and silence with these six sketches for piano. Music For 3 Pianos is ambient music of the highest order, in which the echoes and silences mean as much as the notes themselves.

CD6 - Through The Hill (1994) - with Andy Partridge

Sounding much more like a Harold Budd album than anything ever released by Andy Partridge (of XTC), these ambient pieces are lush, spacious environments populated by Budd's watery keyboards and Partridge's heavily processed, angular guitar lines. Fans of both artists will have fun deciding who wrote what, seeing as the duo shares credit for all pieces (it might be the pop-centric Partridge responsible for the sudden key changes and quasi-song structure). This is one of Andy Partridge's most interesting diversions while stuck in contractual limbo after 1992's Nonsuch; it's a shame that there weren't any more like this.

CD7 - Luxa (1996)

Budd's first solo release since 1991, this is proof that Budd's talent remains consistent: always maintaining that delicate balance between pretty ambient music and something darker in mood that seeps into the corners of his melodies. Divided into four sections, Luxa features six piano-led pieces, a trio of miniatures, five more ambient drones, and a duo of covers from Marion Brown and Steven Brown respectively. The titles suggest homages to some of Budd's favorite 20th century artists (according to the press release) though you'd be hard pressed to hear much of Chet Baker, Serge Poliakoff, and Agnes Martin in these works unless you stretched your brain. Relaxing, warm music, like sun on a red tile floor.
