Egidius Kwartet en College – The Leiden Choirbooks (2010)

Here, a selection from the first Leiden Book of Hours, a collection of valuable manuscripts of high polyphonic singing as it was practised daily in the churches of the Dutch town of Leiden. We may bless ourselves that we still have these manuscripts; many pieces of art did not survive the period of severe Iconoclasm (1566) wreaking havoc among the catholic churches in our country.
The entire project will contain six 2cds. As this is a special release, I’m going to purchase all of them.
The aforelying selection is the only volume realized so far.

The composers presented here are: Nicolas Gomberts, Thomas Crecquillon, Benedictus Appenzeller, Joachimus de Monte, Johannes Cleeff, Christian Hollander, Johannes Richafort and an anonymous one.
