2009 album from the acclaimed British vocalist and former member of Japan. David Sylvian is a man apart. In a thirty-year career that spans the New Romantic movement, ambient works and Progressive Rock, and mature and esoteric Pop, Sylvian has tested popular styles and bent them to his own vision. On Manafon, Sylvian pursues "a completely modern kind of chamber music. Intimate, dynamic, emotive, democratic, economical." In sessions in London, Vienna, and Tokyo, Sylvian assembled the world's leading improvisers and innovators, artists who explore free improvisation, space-specific performance, and live electronics. From Evan Parker and Keith Rowe, to Fennesz and members of Polwechsel, to Sachiko M and Otomo Yoshihide, the musicians provide both a backdrop and a counterweight to his own vocal performances.

David Sylvian - Amplified Gesture [DVD-Audio, DVD-Video]

Amplified Gesture is a 50 minute film, to be included in the deluxe edition alongside a 5.1 stereo mix of the album. Essentially, it presents the album's participants, plus contributions from saxophonist John Butcher and AMM percussionist Eddie Prévost (who have worked with Sylvian on an installation soundtrack called When We Return You Won't Recognise Us), talking about their art under a series of chapter headers.

When David Sylvian finished work on his new album Manafon he wanted to document the individual philosophies of the various musicians who contributed to the project, to ask what had driven them throughout a lifetime of experimentation and inquiry. The list of players includes Christian Fennesz, Toshimaru Nakamura, Evan Parker, Eddie Prévost, Keith Rowe, John Tilbury and Otomo Yoshihide, among others.

Amplified Gesture, directed by Phil Hopkins and produced by David Sylvian, is the result.

The film bears witness as the musicians discuss their work, influences, the evolution of ideas, their personal philosophies – in essence, how they came to find themselves on the particular paths they've taken. The original intention was to give context to Manafon, but the film grew in scale to become an intimate portrait of musicians pursuing a line of inquiry in their life and work to create innovative, free spirited music of uncompromising integrity.

The film premieres at London's ICA on 14 September (the same day that Manafon is released). The evening will include a Q&A session between director Phil Hopkins and the film's interviewer Nick Luscombe, along with an introductory talk and an exclusive preview of material from Manafon. The Wire Sound System will be DJing in the ICA bar throughout the evening.

This two-disc box set comes in two separate hard back, cloth-bound volumes which are themselves inserted into a cloth-bound rigid slip case. Each of the three cloth-bound items feature gold embossed lettering.
Two (18.7cm X 24.1cm) Hard Back books inserted into a rigid slip case. An accompanying (18.5cm x 23.5cm) black on white high quality print of a portrait of David Sylvian by Atsushi Fukui, each individually signed by the artist and David Sylvian.

Volume One: a 40 page full colour printed, perfect bound book to accompany ‘Manafon’, featuring the complete lyrics from ‘Manafon’, accompanied by artwork from the artists Atsushi Fukui and Ruud Van Empel. The CD is the standard version of Manafon.

Volume Two: a 24 page full colour printed, perfect bound book to accompany the documentary “Amplified Gesture”. With a foreword by Clive Bell, this book contains photos and biographies of all of the contributors to the documentary.

David Sylvian - Manafon [Japan SHM-CD]

If there is a single theme that runs through David Sylvian's MANAFON, it's simply: "No hope…no doubt." Like 2003's BLEMISH, it's a rather difficult record, and its emotional and spiritual cousin. It's dark, fraught with emotional and musical difficulty, nonlinear sounds and improvised music, and lyric themes that express a tension between hopelessness and the love of everyday life.

Much of the writing reflects Sylvian's own struggles, though they are often (but not always) relegated to the third person. The studio musicians have either worked with Sylvian before or with one another: they include saxophonist Evan Parker, pianist John Tilbury, guitarists Christian Fennesz and Keith Rowe, members of Polwechsel, and turntablist/guitarist Otomo Yoshihide, among others. There are no drums. It must also be said that the presence of the late Derek Bailey (who worked on BLEMISH) is felt deeply on this recording, which was created on three continents.
