Reviews

Again, no review whatsoever. Reason? I can only speculate. Vedernikov was a top-notch pianist who could hold his own against any competition in technical terms. He was right up there with Richter and Rubinstein, Horowitz and Sofronitky, but his career never really got going, especially not in the western world. Luckily, Denon has re-issued most of his studio (and some live) recordings in a 30-plus-volume collection. This might be considered one of the weaker volumes of the edition. Especially Vedernikov's Haydn is not to my liking. All the notes are there, but it strikes as being rather blood- and life-less. The Beethoven is a different matter, maybe in part because the technical demands are much higher, and Vedernikov feels more comfortable in these situations. At the very least, this is an important document for any serious collector of recordings of classical pianists. Enjoy.
