On Sunday, December 3 1978, Kirill Kondrashin - accompanied by his interpreter and future partner in life Nolda Broekstra - turned up on the doorstep of Piet Heuwekemeijer, former managing director of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Kondrashin had decided for personal and artistic reasons to seek asylum in Holland and he knew of Heuwekemeijer's experience in arranging residence per-mits for Eastern European musicians.' Together they went to a police station in Amsterdam, where the police took away Kondrashin's shoelaces and tie and locked him up in a cell. He eventually got his residence permit and the Concertgebouw Orchestra did everything in its power to provide the welcome guest with a more settled position. As from 1979 he was appointed permanent conductor, alongside the principal conductor Bernard Haitink. Being domiciled in the Netherlands enabled Kondrashin to travel freely all over Western Europe, giving concerts and making recordings, such as those with the Vienna Philharmonic in September 1979. In 1982, he was about to have a permanent orchestra of his own again: the symphony orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, which had appointed him successor to Rafael Kubelik. But before he could take over this new post, Kondrashin died in Amsterdam from a heart attack, on March 7 1981, after leading a performance of Mahler's First Symphony at very short notice, substituting for a colleague who had been taken ill.
The first time Kondrashin conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra was in 1968. He had reached the age of fifty-four and had only really enjoyed an international reputation for the previous ten years. Before that time, however, he had already made a name for himself in the Soviet Union. From 1937 till 1943 he was conductor at the Maly Theatre in Leningrad and this was followed by thirteen years as musical supervisor at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. During the fifties the focus of his activities shifted from opera to orchestral music. From 1960 he was chief conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he made a great number of recordings. Among them the first complete Shostakovich cycle. He became widely known also outside the Soviet Union when he accompanied the American pianist Van Cliburn, winner of the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in 1958. Their recording of Tchaikovsky's First piano concerto, for RCA, became the first classical LP to sell a million copies. From that moment onwards Kondrashin was in great demand with Western recording companies, especially accompanying famous soloists such as David Oistrach, Leonid Kogan and Sviatoslav Richter. Because of his recordings both in Russia and for such labels as RCA, EMI and Philips, Kondrashin was fairly well-known to the Dutch audiences that came to his first concerts in Amsterdam in 1968.
