Hungarian classical singing has always held a great appeal for me ever since I discovered Bluebeard’s Castle from Bartok. Darkly expressive music frenetically jumping to and fro, an unnerving atmosphere creating a high degree of suspence. and menacing, unfamiliar melodies…Kurtag is a true descendant of his great countryman.

For these series of songs, Kurtag set Russian poems to music.
