Gustav Mahler (7 July 1860 – 18 May 1911) was a late-Romantic Austrian composer and one of the leading conductors of his generation. As a composer, he acted as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century.

Titan, eine Tondichtung in Symphonieform was the first revision of the Symphony No.1 (composed 1884-88 and performed as "Symphonische Dichtung in zwei abteilungen", in 5 movements, in Budapest on November 20, 1889) and performed in Hamburg on October 23, 1893. Titan is in 5 movements, including the original second movement, Blumine. In the second revision, performed on 1896, the Symphony No.1 is in 4 movements (without "Blumine").

Among the first results of Mahler studies seems to have been a Piano Quartet in A minor which he composed around 1876 (Mahler was 16 years old), and which received its first performances the same year, but then fell into oblivion. The first performance in modern times of the first movement took place in New York on the 12th February, 1964.
