End of status report

Following the "Band Aid" initiative of Bob Geldof, we approached Lorin Maazel two and a half years ago to ask him to organise a big classical music event with prestigious artists. He accepted without hesitation and quickly became the moving spirit behind "Classic Aid."
A first performance took place in Geneva on September 30, 1986, with June Anderson, Sarah Brighton, Carolyn Carlson, Miguel Ángel Estrella, Yasuko Hayashi, Kiri Te Kanawa, Paul Miles Kingston, Yo Yo Ma, Zubin Mehta, Jessye Norman…
Some of the artists, unable to come to Geneva, had recorded their contributions on video; a link-up was established with Chicago, where Jessye Norman and Sir Georg Solti were able to broadcast live.
More than 300 million viewers watched this extraordinary event […]. It helped to make international opinion more sensitive to the fate of those who had been forced to leave their homes.
In addition, the sale of tickets, the acquisition of the programme by numerous television stations, and the sale of the disc "Classic Aid 1" throughout the world raised more than 600,000 dollars for the benefit of the refugees.
This evening, in the great hall of the UNESCO building, we repeat this experiment with the participation of other artists, among the best in the world. Once again our aim is to alert public opinion to the problem of refugees, who at present amount to 12 million, and also to gather funds to help those who are waiting for a gesture of solidarity from the international community.
We would like to express our gratitude to Lorin Maazel and to all the artists who graciously agreed to take part in order to serve the cause of the refugees.
LEON DAVICO
Director of the Office of Public Information at UNESCO.
