Catherine Mackintosh (viola d'amore, dir.) - Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

John Evelyn (1620-1706) was beguiled and surprised by the sound of the viola d'amore, but he should hardly have been so by the fact that it was on that occasion "played … by a German"; that was the nationality of most of the composers who wrote for it - Bach, Biber, Telemann and Mattheson. The instrument was distinguished by its wide compass, its use of sympathetic strings (not bowed but allowed to resonate), and the fact that it lent itself to playing "the lyra way" (as with the bass viola da gamba), facilitating the use of multiple stopping and contrapuntal textures. Vivaldi was obviously no less attracted by it; six concertos are a lot for such an unusual instrument, and it is fair to say that they represent some of the most beguiling music he wrote. I make no apology for using the word once more, to describe these performances by Catherine Mackintosh and the OAE - beguiling indeed.

Mackintosh, on top form, acts her role with the utmost virtuosity, lovely tone, unimpeachable intonation, and fine style - with some elegant embroidery. The OAE rise to the occasion, making this splendidly engineered recording one to treasure. […] It has all the advantages that the passing of time can (but does not always) bring in this field in relation to the development of both period performance and of recording technique.
