Scarlatti - Sommer, Dybro - Sonatas For Two Guitars (2003) [REPOST]

Scarlatti's music has been an established part of solo classical guitar repertoire for more than a century. When transcribed for guitar duo, the resulting increase in harmonic range and the added availability of baroque ornamentation (trills, mordents, etc.) at either end of the scale makes its origins as keyboard music more apparent.

The guitarists Jan Sommer and Per Dybro perform these transcriptions admirably, with an especially clear grasp of their dynamic possibilities and a sometimes playful approach toward the (always subjective) interpretations of tempo. As guitar programs proliferate at music schools around the world, one hopes to hear more and more performers achieve the level of technical excellence shown by these two gentlemen. It's too bad that the record company saw fit to include no (zero) biographical information about Mr. Dybro; such a fine musician could and should have been treated with a little more respect.

Well engineered, with production values that emphasize clarity and separation, this recording is highly recommended to all classical guitar students and fans, as well as anyone who appreciates baroque music in general and Scarlatti's music specifically. Oscar Veterano
