Mercadante studied under Zingarelli, who also taught Bellini. Although Rossini’s influence is present, especially in the early works, Mercadante admired operas by Meyerbeer, Halevy, and Mozart. The opening of Caritea’s Sinfonia is strongly reminiscent of Mozart’s Don Giovanni , and much of his music reminded me of Donizetti with a hint of Bellini here and there. Eleven years after Caritea , Mercadante endeavored to “reform” opera by varying the forms, eliminating “trivial cabalettas,” crescendos à la Rossini, limiting the number of repeats, and enriching the orchestrations without overwhelming the singers. He also lost interest in ending operas with a splashy showcase for the prima donna. Beginning with his 41st opera Il giuramento (1837), Mercadante put these reforms in place, although his later operas don’t sound all that radically different than many of his earlier ones. The arias are not saturated with embellishments and do not warble on ad infinitum ; where Mercadante particularly shines is his tuneful ensembles and concerted pieces.
Caritea was one of Mercadante’s early successes, following several works that were poorly received. Sergio Segalini, artistic director of the Festival of Valle d’Itria, tells us in the liner notes that he chose Caritea (rather than some of Mercadante’s later and better-known works) to “reveal a new aspect of the composer.” Some casting problems arose that resulted in several last minute replacements and reassignment of roles. Sonia Lee, a student of the Osimo Academy, was to understudy the role of Don Diego (a trouser role), but Martine Dupuy’s withdrawal 15 days before the festival allowed Lee to take the stage. Jacek Laszczkowski had been cast as Rodrigo, but due to scheduling conflicts with another tenor, Laszczkowski quickly learned the role of Alfonso, only giving Gregory Bonfatti two weeks to learn the role of Rodrigo. These production difficulties are not evident when listening to this very lively, committed performance, recorded in July 1995.
The recording was made during performance; the sound is clear and well balanced between the singers and orchestra. Other than occasional applause, audience noises and stage performance sounds are minimal. This seems to be the only recording of Caritea currently available, but is certainly one worth hearing, not only as an introduction to Mercadante’s operas, but also as an enjoyable addition to collectors of bel canto operas.
