Harnoncourt's performance of the Midsummer Night's Dream music is not quite complete, since the ''Fairies' March'' and the ''Funeral March'' are both omitted. On the other hand, he has a complete cantata as a coupling, which gives his disc a strong competitive edge against several issues which only contain the one work. His performance contains two unusual features in that both the ''Nocturne'' and the ''Wedding March'' are taken more quickly than usual, to good effect, it seems to me, since both items can seem a bit ponderous in the wrong hands. Harnoncourt's conducting is generally lively and clear-cut, but a little lacking in affection and humour. The singing and playing are all first-rate, however. Masur's Leipzig disc does contain just the one work, but it is quite well-filled, since a fair amount of dialogue is included, albeit in German translation. Mendelssohn's music undoubtedly gains through being set in its original dramatic context (the English text is printed in the insert) and since Masur's performance is also first-rate his version is the one to have.
Die erste Walpurgisnacht is a setting of a Goethe ballad which depicts a symbolic struggle between pagan (or innovative) forces and Christians (hemmed in by tradition and bigotry), with the latter losing both the physical and moral battle. Mendelssohn's music consists of an overture plus ten vocal numbers. The tenor soloist makes a rather strained, reedy contribution to Harnon-court's performances, but the other two soloists show plenty of dramatic flair and the choral singing is superlative. Harnoncourt conducts watchfully and efficiently, but once more it is possible to imagine a more imaginative, characterful interpretation. Dohnanyi's alternative version, enthusiastically welcomed by EG, offers the Third Symphony as a coupling. The engineering throughout Harnoncourt's disc is excellent.'Review by Gramophone Magazine
The catalog doesn't need a new version of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream, but this one is sung and spoken in German (hence the use of Sommernachtstraum on the cover), which is rare. It's reminder that Mendelssohn was setting a German translation of Shakespeare. Harnoncourt's performance is very fine. His speakers and singers are first-rate, and he evokes both the dreamy relaxation of the play and its mercurial swiftness. Tempos are on the fast side, phrasing is crips without being terse, and the execution by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe could be mistaken for the Concertgebouw.
Mendelssohn wrote the overture to MND when he was 17, but he was thirty when he composed the rest of the music in 1840-41. In between, he set a ballad of Goethe's as a sedular oratorio from 1830, The First Walpurgis Night. It isn't one of his most notable works, since it falls short of expressing Goethe's text. Heresy and paganism seem rather lightly dealt with, and critics often point out that Mendelssohn, a composer uncomfortable with dissonance, was hardly the right choice to depict evil. The writer of the liner notes for this CD takes the posiiton that the music is meant to be satiric and humorous. Maybe.
In any event, Harnoncourt gives his all, and there are moments of quality music, such as the overture, that I was happy to encounter. Among the seven soloists (too many for the practical staging of a 30+ min. work), Thomas Hampson and Rene Pape are the standouts, not surprisingly. the Arnold Schoenberg Choir is expert, as always. I think the best way to approach Die erste Walpurgisnacht is to tkae it as lihgtly as MND, disregarding the Victorian niceties of Mendelssohn's theology. As diabolical fairy music it's not as engaging as its famous disc mate, but enjoyable nonetheless.Review by Santa Fe Listener, Amazon.com
