These were Reger’s final two violin and piano sonatas, written in 1911 and 1915. They were his eighth and ninth essays in the form, but it’s not safe to cite numberings, because two Kleine Sonates have been numbered 6 and 6a and these final two labeled in reverse order, as Nos. 8 and 7. In addition, op. 139 is called Sonata No. 2 on one Internet listing; so stick with the opus numbers. Each has four movements, including a huge finale, and each lasts nearly 40 minutes. Op. 122 is in Reger’s late style, nearly free of the awkward harmonic procedures that make much of his œuvre anathema to many listeners. Still, the opening Moderato is a huge, complex structure, filled with a wide variety of expressive music. A Vivace skitters and reels like a happy drunk. A calm, lyrical Adagio leads to the gentle Allegretto expressivo finale. In 1915, Reger wrote to a friend that his new sonata (op. 139) was in “a whole new style,” adding “now for Reger begins the free Jena style.” The C-Minor Sonata is just as long but less complex than the E-Minor, its ideas flowing more freely. In the first movement, wild, passionate episodes alternate with relaxed musings. A tender Largo is followed by an engaging Scherzo and a lyrical, easy-going set of variations. It is, along with the Clarinet Quintet, Reger’s most accessible chamber music.

There have been few recordings of the violin and piano sonatas since the 1970s complete set of Reger chamber music on German Da Camera LPs, much of it issued here by the Musical Heritage Society (all of it has just been reissued in Europe on 23 CDs: Da Camera DACA77500). Recordings of all the violin and piano sonatas by Ulf Wallin and Roland Pontinen on four cpo discs seem to be in and out of the catalog, never available all at the same time. This pairing (ops. 122 and 139) was played superbly by Hansheinz Schneeberger and Jean-Jacques Dünkl on a 1991 Jecklin-Disco CD. The performances on this new disc top them all for interpretive insight and tonal panache; Vivaces sparkle, slow movements soar, and Hänssler Classics supplies warm, intimate, well-balanced recorded sound. I like this op. 139 even better than a treasured LP by Pina Carmirelli and Rudolf Serkin.
