In his 1990 homage to Luigi Nono, Dieter Schnebel quoted Arnold Schönberg's reaction to the death of Gustav Mahler: "He was truly one of the greatest." Nono's immense influence on musicians and composers of the late 20th and early 21st century has by no means lessened. But it was not his full-length musical theater piece Prometeo, Tragedia dell'ascolto alone that secured his recognition as "one of the greatest;" already some of his early works, such as Due espressioni (1953), plainly reveal the seed from which his future musical language, between delicate texture and expressive elements, would develop. A Carlo Scarpa, architetto, ai suoi infiniti possibili (1984), is one of Nono's many dedications – a kind of requiem for his late friend. Using microintervals, the composer makes the piece hover between the notes C and E flat (referring to the first letters of the dedicatee's name). Fragmente – Stille, an Diotima (1979/80) explores the limits of audibility. This phenomenon of the nearly inaudible permits a concentration of perception beyond compare. And a "sound experiment" for tuba and electronics, Post-Prae-Ludium, premiered at Donaueschingen in 1987, "gently" concludes this remarkable portrait.
