Although Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was celebrated by his contemporaries predominantly as an outstanding organ virtuoso and harpsichordist, his official duties, particularly during the first half of his life, required him to concern himself with stringed instruments and especially with the violin. The number of Bach's violin compositions is far inferior so that of his organ and harpsichord music. Nevertheless, he enriched violin literature with a number of magnificent works. Bach's violin concertos are, however, more numerous than was previously believed. Although only three works in this genre have survived in autograph form, it has been possible to reconstruct four other concertos with violin solo (BWV 1052a, 1056a, 1060a, 1064a). Most of Bach's violin compositions - to which the violin sonatas with continuo should be included, as well as the previously mentioned works - were written while he was employed at the court of Kothen (1717-1723). This is when he devoted himself above all to the composition of instrumental music - chamber, orchestral or solo. These years also saw the creation of his famous "Brandenburg Concertos" and of the first part of his "Well-tempered Clavier". This is the period of his creative maturity to which the present works also belong: the Violin Concerto in A minor (BWV 1041), the Violin Concerto in E major (BWV 1042) and the Concerto in D minor for Two Violins and Orchestra (BWV 1043). It is interesting to note that in Leipzig, Bach later arranged these three violin concertos for harpsichord (BWV 1058, 1054, 1062). Thanks to these later arrangements, it was possible to reconstruct the lost Concerto in
D minor for Violin, Oboe and Orchestra (BWV1060a) on the basis of its arrangement as a concerto for Two Harpsichords and Orchestra (BWV 1060). Bach's violin concertos drew their inspiration from his familiarity with the then popular genre of the Italian - or more precisely, Vivaldian - instrumental concerto. Bach was stimulated by Vivaldi's appealing melodies and took up the three-movement structure and the form of the outer movements, in which solo parts alternate with the orchestral ritornello. However, he expanded his Italian model in a unique manner thanks to his multifarious combination of soli and ritornellos, a rich contrapuntal and harmonic development and, above all, to his incomparable power of invention. He developed a broad scope of expression ranging from dark, dramatic tones to the unforgettable lyricism of the slow movements and up to urbane serenity and optimism. The soloist in all the concertos of our recording is Josef Suk (1929), the grandson of the composer Josef Suk (1874-1935) and great- grandson of Antonin Dvorak. Since 1954, he has been pursuing an uninterrupted and diversified solo career and has become the most eminent Czech violin virtuoso of his generation. Suk's partner in Bach's Concerto for Two Violins is the Czech violin virtuoso Ladislav Jasek (1929), who has been active in Australia since the early 1970's. The oboe part in the Double Concerto in D minor BWV 1060a is played by Jan Adamus (1951).
