The artistic concept behind this disc gives us a somewhat unusual compilation, featuring 9 excerpts from an "early Russian" All-Night Vigil–unison chants transcribed from 16th- and 17th-century manuscripts, recorded in 1988 by the Youth and Students Choir of the Moscow Musical Society (Boris Tevlin, cond.) These are followed by the first six movements from Rachmaninoff's "All-Night Vigil," op. 37, from the classic (and currently unavailable) 1965 recording by the USSR State Chorus under Alexander Sveshnikov. Despite some misleading information in the scanty booklet–which suggests that the early chants are a "composition" by chant scholar Tatiana Vladyshevskaya–and the track information from the online GraceNotes database–which attributes all the tracks to Rach Maninov (sic)–the juxtaposition of the unison chants with Rachmaninoff's "Vigil" admirably demonstrates where Rachmaninoff drew his inspiration (and some actual musical material) for his choral masterpiece. In terms of performance practice, neither the dynamically overblown and over-articulated unison singing, nor the singing of Sveshnikov's choir, with "all stops pulled out," can be considered exemplary; the numerous recordings of the last 10-15 years demonstrate that the Russians have developed a much more subtle approach to the interpretation of both chant and Rachmaninoff. Nevertheless, because of its rarity and uniqueness, many collectors will want to own this disc.
