This electrifying, incisive version of the D minor Symphony appeared in this country in 1963 and was reissued by CBS as part of a three record set of Dvořák's last three symphonies (78304, 9/76). The recording sounded fresher and more modern than that given to Nos. 8 and 9, and I am glad to see it separately available on the mid-price CBS Classics label. The Monteux version (Decca Eclipse ECS779, 7/76) may be even cheaper and the performance has more mystery with gentler manners, but Szell is superb at conveying the symphonic strength in Dvořák's greatest essay in symphonic writing. Szell may miss some of the Slavonic charm but the intensity is irresistible, with fresh dramatic manners in the first movement, a pure and intense account of the slow movement with a glorious horn solo, biting rhythms in the syncopated Scherzo and urgency in the finale. This may not be the most comfortable way of looking at Dvořák but the greatness of the music as well as that of the performers is never in doubt. Edward Greeenfield; Gramophone

Without doubt one of the greatest recordings of the Dvořák Seventh, perhaps the best, sounds as if newly minted on this lustrous DSD transfer on a Sony Classical SACD. Szell achieves from his Cleveland players a precision of articulation, clarity, and transparency of orchestral textures that is unmatched. Add to that the very tangy Czech-sounding playing he gets from his winds and the white hot intensity of the performance and you have a must-have for Dvořák and Szell fans alike. As a big bonus you get classic performances of other Czech staples adding up to a very generous disc of over 75 minutes (rare from Sony in these reissues). To sample this disc, listen to the "Bartered Bride" overture, perhaps the most thrillingly precise and exciting rendition I have heard. The incredible realism of the DSD transfer means that you can hear all of the orchestral textures with breathtaking clarity (including some amazing bite from the double basses and sharp, incisive tympani) and can clearly hear Szell audibly urging on his forces!
