“Chung is a most refined musician and he draws playing of sensitivity and imagination from his orchestra.” - International Record Review, London

Myung-Whun Chung was born in Korea in 1953. He began his musical studies as a pianist and made his debut with the Seoul Philharmonic at the age of seven. In 1974 he won second prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. After musical studies at the Mannes School of Music and the Juilliard School in New York Chung became Giulini’s assistant in Los Angeles in 1979. Just two years later he was named Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. From 1984 until 1990 he was Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra.

In the following years Chung has increasingly turned his attention to opera, but also appears as guest conductor with the world’s greatest ensembles, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, Concertgebouw, Philharmonia, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Metropolitan Opera orchestras. Deeply sensitive to the humanitarian and ecological problems of our age, he launched a series of musical and environmental projects in Korea for youth in 1994, has served as Ambassador for the Drug Control Program at the United Nations, and was named “Man of the year” by UNESCO in 1995. In 1996 he received the Korean government’s highest cultural award for his contribution to Korean musical life and now serves as Korea’s first Honorary Cultural Ambassador.
