This classic account of La Fille du régiment has already seen print in the usual slip box fashion. This mid-price issue gives the same info and pictures (sans the covers, which are unique to each set), but drops the German and Italian translations in favor of French and English only.
Taste for the rollicking La Fille du régiment may vary, but there's no denying that this is a great performance. Joan Sutherland at last gets a chance to show off her innate comic abilities. Spiro Malas is similarly comfortable with the medium, and the both get on famously as the tom-boy Marie and Sulpice, a member of her adoptive regiment. When the two of them partner with Monica Sinclair as La Marquise de Berkenfield in Marie's singing lesson, the results are hilarious – even with out the usual visual gags.
Luciano Pavarotti, here in his second opera recording with the Bonynges, doesn't seem quite as at home, but his vocal ability is perfect for the roll of Tonio. His 9 High Cs come off splendidly.
Richard Bonynge conducts one of his better performances here. Everything hops along excellently. He uses a complete form of the score that retains the Marquise's song (which is dropped in the Italian version, La Figlia del Reggimento). The recording quality is excellent.
The French dialogue is retained, spoken very well by the non-French performers.
Unless you can't stand the frivolity of comic opera, this French opera written by an Italian is bound to please, performed as it is here!
