The Cardinall’s Musick and Andrew Carwood continue their exploration of the sacred music of the acknowledged master of the Tudor era, Thomas Tallis. This project follows the completion of their multi-award-winning series of Byrd’s Latin music. Tallis’s career spans the reigns of four radically different and difficult monarchs, all of whom forced their own religious beliefs on an increasingly divided country. Their various attitudes to the religious questions of the day meant that each required different liturgies and different music to adorn them. Tallis excelled in every style, and this album contains examples of each of them, from the monumental Marian votive antiphon Salve intemerata virgo to the modest English-texted settings of I call and cry to thee and of Psalm translations by Elizabeth I’s Archbishop, Matthew Parker.

Composer: Thomas Tallis
Conductor: Andrew Carwood
Orchestra/Ensemble: The Cardinall's Musick

Reviews: Thomas Tallis (c.1505–1585) lived through four reigns that, as Andrew Carwood says in his notes, each required its own kind of music for the liturgy. That Tallis managed to keep his head while providing the music that each era required tells us much about his character. The Anthem Salve intemerata and the Mass based on it date from the reign of Henry VIII. The Mass has been recorded by Michael Howard, George Guest ( Fanfare 6:6 and 10:2 for the first, no review for the remake), David Flood (20:3), Alistair Dixon (21:6), David Hill (25:1), and Jeremy Summerly (29:2). The Anthem is one of those large-scale anthems, Marian like most of them, that were given such expansive settings down to the end of the Catholic period under Henry VIII. The tenor part of the Mass has been reconstructed by Jon Dixon, a task performed for the other recordings by various editors (Nick Sandon was one). Carwood is similar to Dixon in tempo, a little faster in the Gloria and Credo, a little slower in the last two movements. The others are slower, and Summerly has the broadest tempos of the five recent versions.

The Anthem and two other pieces— Domine quis habitabit and Alleluia Ora pro nobis —also belong to the era of Henry VIII. The former is a setting of Psalm 15, a favorite of many of his contemporaries as a result of the new utility of the psalms for emphasis on Scriptural teaching and godly living. The latter is an early work. The rest are English-texted pieces for Edward VI and Elizabeth, two of them from Archbishop Parker’s Psalm Tunes. Of special interest is I call and cry to thee , for it is a contrafact of O sacrum convivium in the 1575 Cantiones Sacrae . This collection is a nice contrast to Dixon’s complete works of Tallis, which is arranged in homogeneous groups. Here we have a cross-section of his work, all of it well done, like his collection of Byrd’s sacred music. Clearly, the superb work that Dixon did for Tallis is not going to freeze out continued attention to his music.
