The much-recorded set of seven Pietistic cantatas Fanfare 12:5) and the other (Weckmann’s) by Max van Egmond (16:4). In addition to the 17 versions of the main work listed earlier (31:5), Jörg Breiding has recently led a new version which, like this one, has generous fillers. The present version uses one voice to a part along with the Purcell Quartet (violins and organ) and Fretwork (a viol consort), almost exactly the makeup of the favored version under Harry Christophers (34:1). The new version is five minutes longer than that one, not counting the fillers, but neither one approaches the extremes of fast and slow that were noted in the earlier survey. It is no easy matter to judge between an ensemble that includes Emma Kirkby among a fine group of singers and one that has countertenor Robin Blaze in another fine ensemble. I don’t have to retract my earlier recommendation to endorse this equally fine accomplishment.
Kirkby and Thomas are the soloists in the shorter Buxtehude work, which is preserved in the Düben collection with the major work, while Harvey takes the Weckmann piece. The latter, also found in the Düben collection, calls for a bass with a range of two octaves. Weckmann is certainly a lesser talent in this period, but the piece is well made, alternating vocal and instrumental sections. The fillers may tip the balance for one who is trying to choose between this disc and the one by Christophers.
