Classics Today:
Back in the days before recording, the only way to hear new music was to play it yourself. Symphonies posed a particular problem, since most music lovers couldn't afford (or fit) an orchestra to perform in their living rooms. So arrangements for reduced ensembles or piano solos were the only way to go. Liszt's versions of Beethoven's symphonies are outstanding examples of this once ubiquitous practice, and they are fun to listen to on their own, particularly in these brilliant performances. –David Hurwitz
Gramophone:
So there is a good deal to be said in making available these insights by one master composer into another great composer's work, especially in such fine performances, very well recorded, by Cyprien Katsaris. There is an admirable clarity and sense of style in his playing, and everywhere his tempos seem just right..
..Katsaris produces an altogether remarkable clarity of texture, encompassing all the melodic strands and colours..
..Katsaris leaves you with the impression that there are two or more pianists at the keyboard, such is his ability to conjure up a variety of orchestral timbres.
