Cristina Branco has always taken a different path, away from the formulaic or clichéd aspects of Fado, that has been one of individuality and singularity. It's often one of ecstatic joy (as in the most emblematic songs of her career), and is once again on her new album 'Kronos'.
The unifying theme of Cristina's latest album is time, and this album will include originals composed by a dozen very different musicians united by a common trace: all having a long career of many years, giving an extraordinary contribution to the quality of the modern Portuguese songbook.
These include Jose Mario Branco, Sergio Godinho, Jorge Palma, Rui Veloso/Carlos Te, Vitorino, Janita Salome, Victorino d'Almeida, Mario Laginha, Carlos Bica, Joao Paulo Esteves da Silva and Ricardo Dias who have all contributed original songs to 'Kronos' that update the Fado tradition.
This is the tenth album of Branco's career which started onstage in Amsterdam, in 1996, and has been developing to this very day. The early years of Cristina Branco's repertoire was defined by her confessed admiration for one of the strongest personalities of 20th century Portuguese music: Amalia Rodrigues, who continues to inspire her todays. An good example of this was her 'Live' album, recorded in 2006.
With 'Abril', fro the following year, Cristina recreated in her own particular way, the poetic and musical world of another strong personality of Portuguese music from the last few decades: Jose Afonso. As Cristina says, these two records where ones "of reflection, contemplation about all that has happened" until now. With 'Kronos' she seeks to "reflect about the now, and what has been gone and what will come and (what will) make the future".
