Review by Chris Nickson

There's little doubt that Bob Brozman's a virtuoso on all plucked string instruments, but his specialty is the National Resophonic guitar, and he can make that do anything, as he shows on this collection, which, like much of his work, has a decidedly Hawaiian lilt. The bulk of the material on Blue Hula Stomp dates from the 1920s and '30s, rejigged in his own idiosyncratic style, whether it's the unusual, bluesy "Do You Call That a Buddy?" or the lightning fast hula, "Hano Hano Hanalei." He's not just someone who can play with remarkable speed and precision, as he does on "Chili Blues," but also with moving expression, as on the 1916 "hesitation" waltz, "Paauau Waltz," a tune that demands a lot of the player, but which Brozman pulls off with moving panache. Perhaps the most unusual, however, is "Ukulele Spaghetti," played on a National ukulele, the kind of piece to make every guitarist — and uke player — pick his or her jaw up off the floor in complete awe. And when he really takes off on the title track, it becomes explosive, as Brozman handles wooden and National Hawaiian guitars, rhythm and duet guitars, wooden ukulele, saxophones, and a vocal. A work of genuine joy and complete genius.

Blues, Hawaiian, calypso, hot jazz — slide-wizard Bob can do it all with startling authenticity and humor. This CD compilation has five cuts from his Hello Central album to boot.

Review by Ron Wynn

Guitarist Bob Brozman's long-awaited all-blues album A Truckload of Blues covers similar territory as others who have turned in heartfelt treatments of traditional and Delta blues tunes. But the difference between Brozman and many of his predecessors is that he has fun doing these songs. He's wise enough to understand that there are only so many ways one can sing "Old Dog Blues" or "Kitchen Man," and that many of the great veterans really enjoyed what they sang. Brozman is also a technical marvel, particularly on bottleneck. But just as his vocals aren't simply replications, he doesn't merely whip out licks and display flash; there's thought in the soloing, creativity in the riffs and plenty of heart in the grooves. Brozman emerges with one of the better and more memorable repertory projects, one that seems more like his take on traditional blues rather than one more museum piece.

Review by Hal Horowitz

This string-driven world music showcase is a concise textbook lesson on various genres, which shouldn't be surprising since Bob Brozman is a professor at Macquarie University in Australia where he lectures on ethnomusicology. It's a trip around the globe in less than an hour as Brozman showcases the instruments in his extensive guitar collection and his proficiency on them. But this isn't just a dry lesson like you used to snooze through at school. Rather, Brozman makes this music come alive due to his amazing speed, agility, and knowledge of the styles he introduces. Indian, African, and American blues are the touchstones for an album that twists in so many directions on each track that it's impossible to predict where the songs are going. Brozman overdubs himself on up to four stringed instruments on some tracks and plays percussion, making this truly a solo project. Drummer Greg Graber adds drums to a few cuts and is the only other participant. Brozman also wrote the lion's share of material, with covers of Charley Patton's "Poor Me," Skip James' "Cypress Grove Blues," and a few creative rearrangements of traditional tunes the only non-originals. But his songs traverse the same wide swath as the covers, which is to say they swing from blues to worldbeat and back. The guitarist doesn't have a particularly distinctive voice, but he puts across the music with a gruff intensity, somewhat like Leon Redbone, that won't distract the listener from his incredible dexterity on the various stringed instruments. And that's the attraction here, as Brozman twists and scurries through unique chords played on a variety of guitars, all of which are listed in the liner notes. Certainly acoustic guitarists — especially those who enjoy the somewhat similar stylings of Leo Kottke — will find this fascinating, but anyone with even a cursory interest in acoustic blues and worldbeat will appreciate Bob Brozman's amazing musicianship.
