With the exception of the late Amos Milburn, all of the artists presented here have proved to be survivors. None of them is young any more and each has suffered years if not decades of neglect and hardship. But on the brighter side, Charles Brown and Floyd Dixon are now receiving the sort of recognition and honours that equal and perhaps in some ways surpass the fame they enjoyed in their heyday. As for H-Bomb Ferguson, bis own resurgence has ensured that his wigs are made from the best materials.
Ah, Beale Street. lf you‘re into the blues, there are locations that conjure with the imagination. In Chicago, it‘s Maxwell Street, in Detroit, Hastings Street, in Los Angeles, Central Avenue. But for longevity and romance, incident and especially music, most bluesfans would set their feet on Beale Street‘s weaving sidewalk in any decade between the 20s and the 50s. Not that many white people did until the latter decade, for the area was as lawless as it was libidinous. Authorities left Beale Streeters to their own devices, sending in the wagons after dawn to clear away the bodies accrued from another night‘s misadventures.
Johnny Vincent ja rightfully revered for the wealth of New Orleans talent that recorded tor Ace but he knew his bluesmen, too. His background as a
jukebox operator, record store and label owner (of Champion) in Jackson, Ms. and then as talent scout! sales manager tor Specialty stood hirn in excellent
atead. This is the man whose intuition and persistence kick-started Guitar Slim‘s meteoric riae to fame (or should that be notoriety?) with The Things 1 Uaed To Do‘, the man who produced John Lee Hooker‘a ‘Im Mad‘, the man who planned but never completed album aeasions with Charles Brown (see Sing My Blues Tonight‘, WESM 530), and the man
we wust thank for getting Frankie Lee Sims back into a studio to cut ‘What Will Lucy Do‘ snd ‘Walking With Frankie‘ (see ‘4th & Beale & Further South‘, WESM554). And much more besides.
Opinion was mixed when the Original GENUINE MISSISSIPPI BLUES album was issued almost twenty years ago. In fact, lt was a brave project to release at the time, since the Sixties blues boom had ceased to resonate some years before. But Ace Cand ace) producer Johnny Vincent had cut his teeth on this music and when he assessed the talent on otter in the Jackson clubs, he was happy to return to his roots and to pass those roots on to a new audience.

This first volume in Westside's exploration of the blues treasures from the original Jackson, Mississippi-based Ace label yields a treasure trove of unreleased gems. Only five of the 25 selections have seen release before, either on original Ace 45s or on album. Culled from various sessions, these tracks feature tracks from Floyd Dixon, H-Bomb Ferguson, Amos Milburn and Charles Brown. An extra bonus is that all of the tracks here by Floyd Dixon and the majority of those by Charles Brown reveal crude, but effective, stereo recordings from the late 1950s, a treat for the ears, combining the old sound in a new format. This compilation is simply a jump blues aficionado's dream.

This second volume of blues recordings from the vaults of the Jackson, Mississippi-based Ace label yields several tracks to make this a compilation well worth revisiting again and again. It kicks off with six songs from a 1954 unissued session on Memphis musician Joe Hill Louis, with Joe Hill trimming his one-man-band approach down to singing and playing guitar while a three-piece combo beefs up the ensemble sound. Also on board are four songs from Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's 1952 session for the label. Two of these tracks ("My Baby Boogies All the Time" and "I Wonder") saw issuance as a single on Ace, while an atmospheric "Mean Old World" later came out on a Japanese album. The real motherlode on this compilation, however, is the nine tracks that comprise Texas guitarist's Frankie Lee Sims' entire output for the label, including a spirited "What Will Lucy Do?," his big hit "Walkin' With Frankie" and the previously unissued "How Long." Closing out the collection on a very high note are the two singles one on Ace, the other on Ric by drummer/vocalist Julius "Mercy Baby" Mullins. His steaming shuffle "Marked Deck" features one of the longest verses in 12-bar blues history, a whopping 28-bar count that leaves the musicians lunging for the second change in two different spots. Obscure, wonderful music that deserves a place on compact disc and in most anyone's blues collection.

The third entry in Westside's chronicling of the Ace blues masters lurking in Johnny Vincent's vaults yields yet another treasure trove of goodies from this Jackson, Mississippi based label. Kicking off with Joe Dyson's ultra-rare jump classic "Looped," athis 24-track compilation also includes the label's first-ever release, Al Collins' "I Got the Blues for You," as well as true rarities and other classics from Lightnin' Slim ("Bad Feeling Blues" and "Lightnin' Slim's Boogie"), Jerry McCain ("Steady" and "She's Tough") and Sammy Myers ("Sleeping In the Ground" and "My Love Is Here to Stay"). The first recordings from Buddy Guy are aboard ("The Way You Been Treating Me," "Baby Don't You Wanna Come Home") along with rare sides from Schoolboy Cleve, Jesse Allen and Guitar Reed and unissued items from Kenzie Moore and the mysterious Little Cameron and Frankie Fair. The usual strong quotient of New Orleans piano-dominated blues sides are here, but there's also a large number of down-home items peppering the mix to satisfy backwoods fans as well.
