It’s been nearly 20 years in the making, but Ben Shepard finally has a channel for his unique voice. If YEYEY (pronounced Yee-Yee) is a rising phoenix, then The Vision is its heralding call brimming with hope and passion. Signalling a completely new start for Shepard, it fuses layered, multi-instrumental complexity with refined, soulful vocals and post-rock production. There’s also a businesslike confidence from the outset, lent some weight by the presence of some notable collaborators including members of M83, Farallons, Gregor Samsa. Mercury Rev’s Jeff Mercel appears on drums and master violinist Sarah Koenig-Plonskier of the NY Juillard Conservatory provides string arrangements.
