Few people think of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Walton as composers of chamber music; nevertheless, the small number of works of this classification which they published is highly characteristic, personal and significant.Elgar and Vaughan Williams wrote a good deal of it in their prentice years. Unfinished sting quartets and trios… earnestly seeking a outlet for the hard-learned lessons of score-studying. The violin Sonata was the first of the four works - the others were a string quartet, piano quintet and cello sonata - which Elgar wrote in his last creative upsurge before the virtual silence of his last 15 years. The first public performance was given by W.H. Reed and Landon Ronald at the Aeolian Hall, London, in March 1919. Vaughan Williams was over 80 and still in full creative vigour when he composed his only example for the genre; the first performance was given in a BBC broadcast on his 82nd birthday, 12 October 1954, when the violinist was the dedicatee Frederick Grinke, who made a notable recording of the sonata and, earlier, of The Lark Ascending.
After the war, Walton sent himself 'back to school' by composing the String Quartet in A minor. This was followed by the Violin Sonata, which was begun in 1947 after it had been commissioned (during a train journey in Switzerland) by Diana Menuhin who wanted it for her husband, Yehudi, and brother-in-law Louis Kentner. It was completed in 1949 and played for the first time on 30 September that year in Zurich, but Walton was dissatisfied and withdrew the work for revision. The new two-movement version was played, again by Menuhin and Kentner, at Drury Lane on 5 February 1950. The work is dedicated "To Diana & Griselda" (i.e. Mrs. Yehudi Menuhin and Mrs Louis Kentner); the present recording was its first.
