Nice to see Melbourne-based West Australian popsters the Panics returning to the recording environment. It has been five years since the band’s last album, Rain on the Humming Wire, and nine years almost to the day since their most successful album, Cruel Guards, which featured one of the most underrated Australian singles of modern times, Don’t Fight It. What the hell have they been doing for all that time, one wonders. Well, singer and principal songwriter Jae Laffer has been busy. He released his solo album When the Iron Glows Red in 2013, but away from the recording and touring world the songwriter has been championing the work of others, curating the National Gallery of Victoria’s Unplugged music series for the past two years, and has worked on the Murru Concert project, a songwriting workshop with indigenous communities. The Panics’ new album, Hole in Your Pocket, was recorded in their Melbourne studio and is released on October 7, with a national tour commencing a week later.
