Soldier's Heart - Night By Night (2016)

Hailing from Antwerp (Belgium), Sylvie Kreusch (vocals), Benjamin Cools (percussion), Laurens Mariën (keyboards), Ferre Marnef (bass) and Jasper Segers (guitar) formed Soldier’s Heart in 2012. In just a couple of years, Soldier's Heart and their psychedelic dream pop have become one of Belgium's most prominent alternative acts. The band has attributed its contemporary sound to the diverse background of its members. Kreusch is a frequently asked vocalist, Cools is a graduated actor who has worked with some of the country's leading theatre houses - with whom he has performed texts written by Voltaire, Sarah Kane and Gombrowicz -, Ferre Marnef is a graphic design student who is also active in theatre while the band's technical backbone Jasper Segers is a frequently asked music producer and Laurens Mariën has been organizing and curating art exhibitions for the past few years.

After their first two singles gained national recognition, the band went on a tour through Europe's capitals with Balthazar and signed a record deal with Universal. The five twenty-somethings were invited to play showcases in both the U.S. and Japan, which led to international airplay along with raving reviews and editorials in magazines such as Vogue, Dazed & Confused, Elle and Interview Magazine. The fashion world hailed singer Sylvie Kreusch as the ultimate Antwerp it-kid, which led to a musical collaboration with designers Giorgio Armani and Edmund Ooi for Milan Fashion Week, and a performance with VUURWERK during Paris Fashion Week at David Lynch's notorious club Silencio. The band has played Pukkelpop, as well as serving as an opening act for bands such as dEUS, Willis Earl Beal, The Naked And Famous, Crystal Fighters en Youth Lagoon, BRNS, SOHN and Polica.

Instead of rushing to record, the band decided to keep experimenting in their music making process, working once again with producer Jasper Maekelberg for full length Night By Night. Though the band's formation is quite eclectic in its nature, a leitmotiv through their work is their love of fusing the old with the new. In all dimensions of their work they seek explore futuristic or digital elements in combination with references to the past or by using analogue techniques. Visually the group is inspired by characters who lose their grip on reality and descend into surrealism and absurdism. Undoubtedly the band's biggest provider of imagery is artist Stef Van Looveren, who designed the album cover. Lyrically the album centers on Kreusch's life; self-deprecation, unanswered desire, self-destruction, and the incapability of lover's to communicate on the same level are some of the album's most striking themes. Night By Night provides a mature and at times sarcastic interpretation of youth’s bittersweet first experiences with love and adult life, and is a first stepping stone to a promisingly bright future.
