Dmitri Shostakovich was nearly 30 years old when he wrote his 4th Symphony. During this time he had to fear for his life because his opera „Lady Macbeth of Mzensk“ had angered Stalin. This might be the reason why the 4th Symphony was only performed for the first time in 1961, 25 years upon completion.
With this symphony Shostakovich composed an „volcanic eruption“ (Boris Schwarz), which is neither with its boldness nor with its modernity ranking behind the “explosve” „Le Sacre du Printemps“ from Igor Stravinsky or of Prokofiev ’s „Scythian Suite“.

For the first time on record, Shostakovich’s 4th symphony with the fragment of the unpublished movement.

Oleg Caetani offers us another volume of his astonishingly fresh complete symphonies cycle.
