Giocomo Antonio Perti (1661-1756) was an Italian composer who was the dominant personality of the later Bologna school whose 21 operas were widely successful. He also wrote some 200 chamber cantatas, 28 Masses, 20 oratorios and about 150 large scale Psalms and Motets.
We have on this recording the responses and lessons from the Book of Lamentatations, the three Nocturnes of Matins for Good Friday, usually celebrated in the 17th and 18th centuries on the previous evening in the form of Tenebrae, a dramatic service in which the candles in a 'hearse' before the altar were extinguished one by one until only one was left, to symbolise the Light of the World.
Baroque composers, especially in France, usually set their texts in a highly-charged, florid or sensuous manner. These settings by Perti are much simpler, though there's no lack of drama where indicated and the performance is anything but dull. Perti's music is characterised ripe with melodic invention and the use of diverse structures. Although this disc does not demonstrate his interesting orchestration, I would be remiss not to mention that he was indeed a master of festive orchestration and many of his works do display a lucid command of his art, elastic adaptability and a penchant for dialogue between instruments and voice. This recording makes use of two organists: Liuwe Tamminga and Serio Vartolo.
This is an inspirational rendering of these well-composed works of a composer who should be better known. The dominant singers are obviously skilled in this genre for each one delivered their solo sections with much intensity and skill. I personally would of have liked to hear more of the countertenor voice of Michel van Goethem, whose sound his rich and full and lovely to hear; as is the tenor voice of Alessandro Carmignani. Two of the highpoints, at least for me: Track Five from the Lamentations sung by Alessandro Carmignani and Track Ten from the Lamentations sung by Michel van Goethem; both are lengthy contributions, but the singers kept the drama sustained throughout. One of the interesting aspects of this disc was the varied vocal combinations througout. In addition, we have the complete choir contributions, the choir consisting of five sopranos, five altos, five tenors and four basses; all of which included the soloists.
