Many of you may know Scott Monteith under his more commonly known alias Deadbeat, where for over ten years the Ontario native has skilfully crafted his singular vision of dub techno. Premiered at 2016's Berlin Atonal festival, Qwali Quatsch is said to be inspired by a performance he caught from Asif Ali Kahn's Qawwal. Here Monteith presents a sound that explores his interpretation of the South Asian Sufi devotional music and it is rather curious, if we do say so ourselves. Become transfixed by some epic drone explorations on offer; sometimes soaring, at other times glistening or even as guttural as a Stephen O'Malley guitar riff and all allowing you to fully surrender to the void. Features Sophie Trudeau of Godspeed You Black Emperor! providing some of her signature string arrangements. Highly recommended.
