Although most of Heinrich Schütz's surviving music is for the church, his first published work was this set of Italian madrigals–a remarkable collection of pieces that perfectly capture the style while continually throwing off sparks of originality. Dedicated to a patron back in Germany who funded his two-year study in Venice with the great master, Giovanni Gabrieli, these 19 madrigals are rich in imagery and occasionally make tantalizingly brief forays into harmonic territory reminiscent of Gesualdo.

Composer: Heinrich Schütz
Performer: Konrad Junghänel
Conductor: Konrad Junghänel
Orchestra/Ensemble: Cantus Cölln

Reviews: As you listen to the well-crafted lines and artful musical illustrations of the colorful texts–whose subjects, of course are the agonies and ecstasies of love hoped for, love lost, love desired but never gonna happen–you wonder why Schütz never again turned to a form for which he showed such a seemingly natural gift. Whatever the reason, it's a treat to hear these pieces performed with such affinity for the style, and with such precision, pleasing tone, and ensemble balance. The Cantus Cölln gives us full-flavored renditions of each madrigal, showing a particular knack for finely polished, round, and resonant endings–just listen and you'll see what I mean! If you're new to Schütz or are familiar only with his sacred works, this recording is a sure and satisfying path to discovery–and you can't go wrong, because the music is terrific all on its own.
