Japanese 1st Press with bonus tracks
This italian band is not among the "top" metal acts, but they have always delivered something interesting and experimental. They're often labelled "techno-death metal" and that is basically true, but it doesn't say much about their music, since they are not similar to other techno-death acts that started out in the early nineties/late eigties. These bands (all of them exist no longer - Cynic, Atheist, Pestilence, Nocturnus) are all original and can never be confused with others. So are Sadist. Maybe the "Progressive Death Metal" fits better than "Techno-death", when describing them.Sadist official homepage
Their first album "Above the Light" (1993) was a piece of quite ordinary death metal, but it featured full-time keyboards (which sounded totally different from Nocturnus) and experimental moments. The next opus entitled "Tribe" was more technical, more keyboard-oriented and much more experimental and "out there". On the 1997 album "Crust" some of these tendencies are developed further and some are diminished. This album seems less chaotic compared to "Tribe". In my opinion it's more structured and not so full of "look-what-a-strange-music-we-play" moments, but the vocals are even sicker . The odd and sometimes kind of dissonant keyboard fills are still there and they're really colourful, original and effective. Keys often take the leading role, and they make the music only heavier (in an emotional sense) and more disturbing (Not to mention that keys ARE a large part of their music). This is no easy-listening music, but it's highly original and captivating (when you get into it).
The guitar riffs for the most part are quite simple, but catchy and executed with precision. The guitar sound is not the usual "I'll-make-your-ears-bleed" Death Metal guitar tone. It's not so loud and intense in the mix. There are a few leads here and there and they vary between being somewhat jazzy and technical to being simple, (almost) emotional and even kind of "ambient". The instrumental track "Holy…" features an amazing solo from the latter. However, the guitar is not what makes Sadist such a distinctive band.
The bass is very jazzy and technical and very audible all the time. There are even several moments when drums form a "rhythm section" with guitar, and bass is more like a lead instrument. The bass is sometimes (both musically and sound-wise) reminiscent of Watchtower's "Control and Resistance".
Actually, the things that make me call this music "Death Metal" are the vocals and the guitars. The guitars are heavy and distorted and the vocals are harsh, but this is where the similarities between Sadist anno 1997 and usual death metal end. It's hard for me to compare it to something else, since I haven't heard anything even remotely similar to "Crust". But if you like the latest albums of Solefald, Arcturus, Ephel Duath, Emperor or Enslaved (i.e. you like these "post-" and "prog-" experimental things) and are not captured by a single sub-genre of metal, you might like this. I really do.
