Noel Mewton-Wood’s (1922-53) journey from underestimated virtuoso to present-day icon is cause for both celebration and irony. Glowing testimonials to his ‘genius’ (Sir Malcolm Sargent) from Myra Hess, Beecham, Schnabel, Bliss, Hindemith and Britten were countered by indifference from the major record labels and concert managements, a situation that doubtless contributed to his suicide at the age of 31. Behind an ebullient surface, Mewton-Wood was a romantic idealist, susceptible to depression and mood-swings. So it is hardly surprising to find the dichotomy reflected in performances which alternate a luminous poetic delicacy with a rare energy and bravura. [[i]Bryce Morrison, Gramophone, November 2003]

This performance of the Chopin No.1 - and it has the life of a performance - is a delight in its spontaneity, with the second movement effortlessly beautiful. Mewton-Wood’s passage-work is so well-articulated.
Whilst he may have been frustrated at not being taken up by a major recording company for concerto projects - though he did record solo works for Decca - his association with Walter Goehr was a true meeting of minds. The orchestra is slightly less polished here than in the Tchaikovsky recording recently reviewed, and the recording quality not quite as good, but this should not put anyone off enjoying this superb performance to the full. [[i]Excerpt from notes by Peter Joelson]

Even if otherwise noted in the booklet, these recordings were most probably made in 1951 (No.2) and 1952 (No.1).
