Milhaud's Symphony No. 5 was written on commission from Italian Radio (RAI), and was first performed by the RAI Orchestra of Turin under the composer's direction. The two previous symphonies had expressed public sentiments. (They were respectively, a symphony to celebrate the victory of World War II and to commemorate the French Revolution of 1848.) The mood of this symphony, though, is cool and objective Alexander Fried of the San Francisco Examiner noted its "refreshing, almost sardonic crackle." The slow movement is the most memorable part of the symphony. For the most part, the symphony is composed on short motives rather than on broad melodies.Tracks:
Symphony No. 6 was written at Milhaud's home near Mills College, Oakland, California. It was commissioned for the 75th Anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was premiered by that ensemble under Charles Munch on October 7, 1955. The opening movement has two lyrical ideas, one for string and one for fuller orchestra. The second movement is true to its expression marking, "tumultuous." Before the end of the movement, the busy polyphonic activity of this movement subsides to relative calm, as if to clear the way for the third movement. As is often the case with Milhaud, the slow movement is the emotional core of the work. It is very lyrical, in a three-part song form. The conclusion is vigorous and joyous. As a whole, the symphony was not well received by its initial commentators.
