Live from Jacksonville…

On this live recorded concert special, Lynyrd Skynyrd go back to where it all began. Back to Jacksonville, Florida. Back to the town where their high school phys. ed. teacher Leonard Skinner gave them hell for being the long-haired, booze-swilling, Rock & Roll outlaws they were. Back to the territory that gave birth to the musical and lyrical content of this most American of bands. Back to perform the entirety of “pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd“ and “Second Helping,” the first two legendary albums that forever planted their rebel flag in the Rock & Roll landscape.

The musical origins of Lynyrd Skynyrd come from the genuine, real-deal, American musical roots. They’re not a “roots band” as the term has come to be known in the 21st century. Not Americana, alt-Country, or the like. “Roots” as in the roots of Rock 8t Roll; Rhythm & Blues, Country 8c Western, Delta Blues, Honky-Tonk. These influences combined with the original band members love of British Blues-Rock (think Cream and Free) merged to form the sound of Skynyrd as we know it today.

“We just wanted to be a rock band,” Gary Rossington recently told Guitar World’s Ted Drozdowski. “Sure we were from the South and we grew up on blues and country, but we really loved the blues and rock that was coming from England, and that’s what we wanted to play.”

Despite the tragic circumstances that leave Rossington as the lone original member in today’s lineup, the current band deliver with authority, sincerity, sweat and hard living. You can hear it in the swagger and sorrow of Johnny Van Zant’s voice and the sting of their triple-guitar attack.

“I Ain’t The One,” the opening track from “pronounced” combines many of the fundamentals on which the Skynyrd musical template is based; the riff-centric song puts a spotlight on the three guitarists while Johnny spits out his older brothers plain-spoken, no-bullshit lyrics. Rickey Medlocke’s piercing solo pays homage to the late Allen Collins but it’s by no means a note-for-note cop.

“Tuesday’s Gone” follows. The heartache in Johnny’s voice is palpable and complemented by the mournfidness of Gary’s guitar solos. The lyrics and music of this song have a different sentiment but resonates with the same conviction as any other song on the first album.

We’re “up” again with the boogie-woogie of “Gimme Three Steps,” the Skynyrd guitar army unleashed for the first time in the songs riotous middle section. Who would’ve ever thought that a tale of a good time gone horribly wrong would yield such a raucous atmosphere as that which this song always produces?

“God bless the simple man!” exhorts Johnny passionately. “Simple Man” has become one the band’s hallmark songs not just due to the fact that this stunning ballad is a musical masterwork but also because of the timeless nature of the lyrics. Ronnie Van Zant’s lyrics were the work of a simple man and spoke to the immense majority of the honest, unassuming people who were (are) in the Skynyrd audience night after night. The band does the original version proud starting the song slowly, then builds in intensity until Gary and Rickey unleash a stunning tandem guitar solo.

One of the beauties in witnessing a band like Skynyrd perform an entire album is the chance to hear deep cuts like “Things Goin’On,’’“Mississippi Kid” and “Poison Whiskey,” songs not usually featured in a typical Skynyrd set. Lyrically, “Things Goin’ On” is a case of “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” Written over forty years ago the subject matter could apply to the present day. “Well, until they make it right I hope they never sleep at night. They better make some changes and do it soon.” Amen brother! “Mississippi Kid” features some refined, sublime slide guitar from Gary while “Poison Whiskey” showcases Peter Keys honky-tonk piano stylings.

And then… it’s time.

“To me, there’s nothin’ freer than that bird who’s flyin’ wherever it wants to go and that’s what this country’s all about… being free… and I think everyone wants to be a free bird.”

“Lord knows I can’t change” and neither does the immaculately played, completely faithful-to-the-original version of “Free Bird” that the band lays down here. What also doesn’t change is the tenderness of the songs first section and the intensity of the guitar onslaught that follows as Rickey and Mark ratchet up the momentum as their solos build.

And with that, “pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd” is concluded. Eight songs, not a wasted moment or an unnecessary note, that rock like bastards or bleed sentimentality.

Now, how do you follow that? With a “Second Helping” of classic songs of course! It also helps when the opening song from your second album is the de facto Southern National Anthem. “Sweet Home Alabama” featuring the collective talents of the Jacksonville choir. (That’d be the audience to you.) Amd what a sweet sound they make!

As they did on the “pronounced” set, Skynyrd reach into the deepest part of their catalog for “I Need You.” The lyrics might sound trite if sung by a lesser vocalist but the melancholy depth of Johnny’s voice will have an emotional impact on anyone who’s been separated from their mate for far too long. If you have a pulse, the honeyed guitar harmonies will give you the same goosebumps that Rickey alludes to mid song.

“Don’t Ask Me No Questions” and “Swamp Music” display the bands R&B roots front and center with the additional punch of the horn section. Lyrically, both songs reveal a man who looked forward to the uncomplicated life that was afforded him when he came off the road.

MCA Records got one hell of a bargain if the lyrics to "Workin For MCA" are accurate. 9,000 bucks to sign Lynyrd Skynyrd?!?! That was chump change even in the 70s but, judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, the band don’t seem too concerned about past mistakes as they roll out a killer version of one of the staples of their live show.

Boyhood memories of simpler times and the magical allure of the blues are outlined on “The Ballad Of Curtis Loew.” Everyone should be so lucky as to encounter a Curtis Loew early in their life. Real or imaginary, he made a deep, lasting impression on the young narrator of the song.

Ronnie Van Zant often wrote about the excesses of the Rock & Roll lifestyle and “The Needle And The Spoon” wasn’t the first cautionary tale he spun about it. Although Skynyrd were notorious for their fast living it seems that Ronnie, at least, knew his limits.

J.J. Cale’s “Call Me The Breeze” is the perfect ending to this special show. The groove brings a smile and a step to all those in attendance.

If you’ve watched the show prior to reading these notes then it’s clear as the nose on your face that this particular lineup of Skynyrd kicks some serious ass! The solos are alternately poignant and dazzling, the vocals are soulful, and the rhythm section of Johnny Colt and Michael Cartellone are tighter than ever.

During the show Johnny declares that, “the legend lives on into 2015.” May it live on forever!
