Lykaion is an Italian metal band, formed in 2003, and just recently signed onto Bakerteam Records. The band has had four previously self-released EPs, and their latest Nothing but Death is their first full length. Lykaion is a metal force to be reckoned with, combining many different genres into one. They have a dark, ethereal sound similar to that of Sentenced and Katatonia, but remain very true, emotional, raw, and heavy!
Nothing but Death is a release to be proud of and combines all elements of heavy metal, power metal, and gothic rock. The instrumentation and vocals throughout the entire album are extremely professional, well recorded, well produced, and perfectly mixed. A definite quality release!
Nothing but Death, the title track, opens the album up with a bang. The first three tracks are solid, beautifully tragic, heavy, and catchy as hell all at the same time. A great way to begin an album indeed! Track #4, Empty, is a beautiful slower song, very personal and full of emotion. It’s about growing up so innocent and happy, but realizing that you are so alone and empty. It’s a very sad song as the singer sings “I’m slowly dying inside, don’t catch me if I fall.” But it’s so damn beautiful you can’t help but enjoy it. The next track, The Dance, is really catchy while staying heavy and raw.
As the album continues you get a very angsty, heartfelt vibe that the singer has been hurt way too many times by the opposite sex. Fuck You (I Love Myself) and Passion Kills are very angry songs, but still very pleasant listens. The last track, Dimenthicherai sticks out on the album for me just because of the tone of the music. It’s a bit happier, in a different key it holds a different feeling than the rest. It opens up fast and heavy but slows down a lot while the vocalist begins the verse getting angrier and angrier. They then begin to go into Italian lyrics which makes the song turn into a whole new tone. The music behind the Italian chorus gets very dancy and melodic as the singer gets angrier and angrier but it is just the perfect blend of anger and beauty.
One thing I really love about this genre, is a band that genuinely knows how to write good, honest, and raw emotional metal and Lykaion is definitely one of those bands. They aren’t afraid to admit when they’re hurt or tired. But in the midst of all of this sadness and anger, lies beauty… beautiful music, beautiful melodies, and beautiful feelings. This album is highly recommended for fans of Sentenced, Katatonia, or any form of gothic rock/metal. It’s a solid release that deserves a lot of press! Spread the word!~ metal-archives.com
