This disc brings together four sacred cantatas by composers who only infrequently feature in these pages. Best known of them is Georg Anton Benda, brother of the celebrated violinist Franz, who served Frederick the Great for over half-a-century. Georg Benda made a name for himself with his Singspiels and innovative melodramas, which made a deep impression on Mozart. There is nothing innovative about either of the two cantatas with instruments performed here, though from an expressive standpoint they are far from being run-of-the-mill. Both belong to a cycle prepared in 1761 while Benda was Music Director at the Court of Gotha. The structure is similar for each – an opening chorus, a centrally placed chorale and the chorus, da capo, to conclude; recitatives and arias are dispersed between these pillars. It is the arias which prove the most interesting element, and there are two especially fine ones, for bass and tenor respectively.
Carl Friedrich Gessel was a contemporary of Benda, working at Zittau. I must confess I’d never previously heard of the chap, but his cantata for voices and instruments for the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity contains, in its extended da capo aria for soprano, some of the most appealing music in the programme. And it’s well sung by Dorothee Mields, who brings warmth, virtuosity and an evenly controlled tone to her performance. The Erlebach piece belongs to an earlier period. He was based at the Court of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The present cantata contains an aria for each of the four soloists, framed by a sinfonia and da capo chorus. Instrumental scoring consists of divided violins and violas with continuo. In contrast with the early classical style of the previous pieces this one has its feet firmly planted in the baroque. It’s a tenderly and intimately expressive work, sensitively sung by all voices, those of Mields and Klaus Mertens proving irresistible.
