Lalo - Symphonie Espagnole - Grumiaux

The reference recording of the Lalo concerto

Classics Today:
..it's a tribute to Grumiaux's magnificent musicianship, to the ever-characterful, vivacious support of Manuel Rosenthal, and to the tangy French sonority of the Lamoureux Orchestra, that I love this performance so much. These guys know how to make the music swing, as much in the clunky opening and the often-uninspired third movement Intermezzo (what a fine, singing tone Grumiaux has!) as in the graceful, smiling "finale from percussion hell". –David Hurwitz

Grumiaux’s reading of the (Saint-Saens) Concerto stands with Milstein’s (available in the Milstein collection (“The Art of Nathan Milstein,” EMI Classics 64830) and Francescatti’s –David Hurwitz
Gramophone:
..although there are several other versions of the Lab o (sic) currently available, mostly of a very high standard, none is more enjoyable than this one. Besides Grumiaux's playing so beautifully, Rosenthal obtains an excellent performance from the Lamoureux Orchestra
Musicweb:
Grumiaux’s Lalo is technically adroit, tonally expressive and flexible. The Intermezzo benefits from his excellently equalized lower string work whilst the andante is resonantly moving, with great purity of tonal production without ever breaching architectural or expressive proprieties. Grumiaux may not smoulder his way through the concerto but his is a performance that enshrines qualities far removed from mere surface affiliations. The Introduction and rondo capriccioso, one of Saint-Saëns’ most famous violinistic showpieces, is paced with unusual deliberation before the rondo gathers pace in a scintillatingly rapid traversal – with precise articulation, and the almost imperceptible employment of gradations and increments of tonal resources.
