Barsegh Kanachian (1885-1967) is one of the outstanding representatives of musical culture of Armenian diaspora. While living in Turkey, Cyprus and Lebanon Kanachian was very prolific as a composer, choirmaster, pedagogue, musical public figure. Decisive role in B.Kanachian's musical destiny had his meeting in Istanbul in 1910 with the classicist of Armenian music Komitas. He sang in Komitas' «GUSAN» choir, took choirmaster lessons from him and became one of his «five students». Many years later, in 1936 he founded permanently functioning choir in Beirut, naming it in name of Komitas' choir- «GUSAN». For this choir, actually, he arranged many folksongs, mostly Armenian, but also some Arabic, and with this choir he had many brilliant performances.
As a composer, Kanachian worked in several genres. He created 30 pieces of choir music, 10 solos, 20 songs for children, «ABEGHA» lyrical song opera (following L.Shant's «Old Gods» drama) and others. His famous lullaby «Orore» permanently adorns the repertoir of Armenian singers.
In his works Kanachian displays himself not only as a deserved successor of Komitas' traditions, but also as a skillful melodymaker, having exceptional sense of musical lyrics. He was delighted by homeland scenery, displays of people's traditions, especially elements of folk dance music and festivities. In some of his choir music pieces B.Kanachian used to implement the methodology of thematic development («Dalilo», «Hoy-nar», «With Roses»). It is also worth mentioning his «Nanor» folkword choir, depicting the pilgrimage to «Saint Karapetw of Mush, which became one of the masterpieces of Armenian classical choir music.
The Yerevan Chamber Choir led by Harutyun Topikyan by issuing this CD presents for the first time the whole Barsegh Kanachian's choir music in a single summary format….
