This disc makes for a satisfying programme. I agree with its title, too, for although reference books often call Honegger Swiss he was born in Le Havre, became a pupil of d'Indy in Paris, was one of Les Six and died in the French capital. His Cello Concerto is a small work both in style and content, pastorally Gallic in feeling and with a bouncy second section and finale to its single-movement form. This is unfamiliar repertory, well written for the cello, that earns its place in the catalogue.
The Saint-Saens concerto is more familiar: the composer of Danse macabre and Le carnaval des animaux has been called the greatest who ever lived ''who wasn't a genius'', and we can understand what is meant, for he does not storm the heights and plumb the depths in the romantic tradition of his time. His nearest predecessor among the great masters is in fact Mendelssohn, and his occasional blandness is more than compensated for by superlative technique and a warm heart. The First Cello Concerto is the more familiar of the two he wrote, and is typical in that it offers plentiful brilliance rather than the autumnal mellowness we find in the cello concertos of Dvorak, Elgar and Delius; its minor key does not mean sadness (in fact it ends in A major). Like the Honegger, it is fairly brief (under 20 minutes here), and integrates elements of the usual three movements into a single structure incorporating a section in the gently archaic style of a minuet. Julian Lloyd Webber and the ECO under Yan-Pascal Tortelier play this music with panache and elegance.
The Allegro appassionato (which ends their programme) is also stylishly done, as is Faure's Elegie in the composer's orchestration of what was originally a piece for cello and piano. Lloyd Webber makes something eloquently moving out of this familiar music, and his warmly lyrical playing also works well in d'Indy's piece, its German title reminding us of the composer's love of Beethoven and Wagner, this being reflected in the fervently song-like writing. This is an attractive issue, and the full-toned but well-detailed recording does justice to the soloist's fine cello sound as well as that of the orchestra.–Christopher Headington
