Enrico Pieranunzi Biography: A superior post bop pianist influenced by Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner but long possessing his own sound, Enrico Pieranunzi is one of the top jazz pianists living in Italy. He began studying piano when he was five, partly from his father who was a jazz-loving guitarist. Pieranunzi became a professional when he was 19, playing with trombonist Marcello Rosa's quartet. Since then, in addition to leading his own groups, Pieranunzi has worked with many top players (both Europeans and Americans) including Franco Ambrosetti, Chet Baker, Benny Bailey, Art Farmer, Curtis Fuller, Johnny Griffin, Charlie Haden, Jim Hall, Lee Konitz, Sal Nistico, Enrico Rava, Tony Scott, Kai Winding and Phil Woods. Enrico Pieranunzi, who teaches at a conservatory, has done studio work and sometimes works as a chamber music soloist. He has recorded several impressive jazz sets as a leader for Enja, Timeless and especially Soul Note. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Product Description: Now, after thirty long and tormented years, this legendary album is finally going to be released on the Pieranunzi Series launched by EGEA Records. Soft Journey was written by Enrico after the confirmation that he would have recorded soon this album with Chet, then came Brown Cat Dance , a hard bop blues tune. Chet's pairs with the great pianist for an album of mostly original tunes. The absence of standards, along with some great arrangements, gives the CD a fresh, breezy feel. Here, Enrico introduces Chet to Night Bird , a somewhat unusual minor blues that will become a regular until his last days. Baker sings on an odd Animali Diurni , a chance to shine as the magnificent jazz singer he was. Chet Baker once again reinvents "My Funny Valentine" by playing muted trumpet, something he rarely did for that song. They rehearsed the repertory for several days and then recorded it. But in those days jazz market distribution mechanisms were very rudimentary and so, despite its highly favourable critical reception, this album remained an obscure find for true enthusiasts only. Now, after thirty long and tormented years, EGEA Records, in the year of the 20th anniversary of Chet s death, releases this album which according to both critics and musicians is the most memorable of Chet s late career. Recorded in Rome on December 4, 1979 and January 4, 1980

Chet Baker Meets Enrico Pieranunzi - Soft Journey - 1980

Review: When I ordered this album I didn't have any real expectations. I mean, Italian recordings are quite often technically below par. But interest in the unknown material and the unknown sidesmen (except for Del Fra) made me buy it anyway, hey, it's still Chet Baker.

Well, this is one of the most intereseting recordings in my CB collection (40+ albums, so I think I have a right to speak out). Sound quality is perfect, choice of material is refreshing, even My Funny Valentine sounds fine and the entire set has a very peaceful atmosphere. When I received the package a week ago I put it in the cd player and it's still in. You can easily play this numerous times and not be bored for a second. ~ Amazon Customer
