The disc contains two original lp recordings, the first, The Eleventh Hour", was recorded in August, 1962, and the second "Sandy's Gone", in September, 1963. Both were/are on Verve. The Eleventh Hour finds Mr. Hodges with strings turning in twelve lush and rich tracks which may well be appropriate listening at the eleventh hour. Jazz musicians with strings? Well it worked with Ben Webster, Charlie Parker (both on Verve by the way) and with Art Pepper on the Winter Moon sessions. Now the named were all master musicians who seem perfectly at home in this rather unusual setting. Hodges is no exception and provides us with some truly beautiful music. Mr. Ellington would surely have approved. The second recording is, however, rather odd. First of all ,it does not fit with the first set, and secondly it seems to me that this is not music that Hodges would want to play or should be playing, with the possible exception of Blue Velvet. I kept thinking of Lawrence Welk, and those were not complimentary thoughts. OK this is Hodges in a different mood, but is it the right one? There is no bad playing, but there is also no "sit up and listen to that" playing, unlike, as previously mentioned, the first set. Maybe I am used to Hodges in specific settings, and this one, as yet, does not sit well. Maybe in time. So four stars for the odd combination and not for the musicianship. Strings on The Eleventh Hour are arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson with production by Creed Taylor - that should tell you something. Claus Ogerman is conductor on the second set, also produced by Creed Taylor - maybe not one of his better production choices.
