James Taylor, Carole King - In Intimate Performance (2013) [Unofficial Release]

This disc offers intimate early performances from two artists whose stars were on the rise when the concerts were given: James Taylor, recorded live in 1970, and Carole King, recorded in 1971 (with Taylor appearing as a sideman).

Taylor had come to London in 1968, after the breakup of his band Flying Machine, which he’d formed with Danny Kortchmar (who plays guitar on the Carole King set). Discovered by Paul McCartney of the Beatles, Taylor released an album on the Beaties’ Apple label. Peter Asher, who produced that album, became Taylor’s manager, and in 1970, Taylor recorded the album “Sweet Baby James” with Warner Brothers; both the album and the single “Fire and Rain” reached the top five.

That album was taking off internationally when Taylor played this intimate London show. He leads off with a Beatles song, then delves into his rapidly developing catalogue. Taylor s manner is notably unassuming and quiet. Yet the music he plays here has had an enormous impact.

The 1971 Carole King concert was also recorded in London, also at a pivotal moment in the artist’s career.

King was by no means a newcomer, having prospered as a Brill Building songwriter from her teens. Yet even as psychedelia’s Chicago-blues-inspired guitar heroics were climaxing, she revived the piano as a rock-inflected accompanying instrument and began a career as a singer, writing and recording new radio hits influenced by soul, jazz, and cabaret.

Thus, while King was only 28 when this concert was recorded, she had a decade s experience in music, and her album Tapestry” had just given her a number-one hit with It s Too Late. Here she explores the music of her first two albums – and brings her early work up to ate, with new renditions of her early-1960’s hits “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, which she’d written for the Shirelles, and “Up On The Roof,” which she’d written for the Drifters.

It seems this CD is a mix of 2 BBC concerts. The first 10 tracks are from James Taylor BBC solo 1970. The remaining tracks are Carole King solo BBC. This review is regarding the first 10 tracks. As far as I know, the 1970 BBC James Taylor solo concert had never been officially released, but it does exist in various bootleg and YouTube video variations captured from TV broadcasts. This CD seems to look like an official release. The graphics of this CD are done very well. The sound quality of the first 10 tracks are the best I have heard, and track 6 (Tube Rose Snuff) is included here whereas some other version cut that song. However - A Highway Song, Sweet Baby James are missing. I would rather have had a complete 1970 James Taylor BBC concert than this mix. Really? leave off Sweet Baby James - Really???
