It has been said that "the man of the Baroque loves unrest and tension and the overwhelmingly pathetic". In some ways the remark seems odd: after all, is it not the Baroque era, say from 1600 to 1750, that produced the stately court music of Purcell, the dignified oratorios and anthems of Handel, and the triumphant intellectual achievement of Bach's Art of Fuguel Of course it is. Yet on actually experiencing these works as a listener, one realizes that music did not have to wait until Beethoven and the Romantic period for strong feelings to be expressed. The beginning of the 17th century, indeed, saw the birth - or, after the ancient Greeks, the rebirth - of the music drama or opera. This happened in Italy, with Monteverdi among the early operatic masters. And in instrumental music, too, Italian composers learned how to move a listener to sweet emotions that purged the soul and refreshed the heart.

The celebrated Adagio in G minor put together from fragments by Tomaso Albinoni is surely a perfect example of such music. The wealthy Venetian Albinoni remained a dilettante throughout his life, but he composed more than 50 operas as well as much other music. The Adagio played here has a steady tread in triple time above which a long melody unfolds in rich, sighing phrases on the violins. The mood is varied somewhat, for example in cadenza-like passages for violin solo, but remains predominantly elegiac. The same key of G minor is used by Corelli in his Concerto Grosso op. 6 no. 8. The concerto was the most typical orchestral form of Baroque music, its name implying a joining together of musical forces, in this case the string instruments led by the violins. The four movements alternate slow and fast tempos, and at the same time a larger and smaller group of instruments engage in a dialogue that itself contributes to the form of the music, such as when a main melody is played by the larger group and interspersed with episodes given by the smaller. The group of 12 concertos to which this work belongs achieved immense popularity throughout Europe. Vivaldi, perhaps the best-known among the Baroque Italian composers of concertos, wrote literally hundreds of works in the form. The "Alia ru-stica" (country-style) concerto grosso played here is best known for the surprising minor-key ending of its first movement following a normal restatement of the opening material in G major. The pastoral element in the music is not unexpected from the composer of the Four Seasons. A less well-known solo concerto is the one in E major, nicknamed "L'Amoroso" (The Lover), but it demonstrates equally well the composer's great understanding of the violin in a range of moods from lyrical to brilliant.

Johann Pachelbel taught Bach's elder brother Jo-hann Christoph and was thus a "grand-teacher" of Bach himself. His celebrated Canon, a stately tread of overlapping descending major scales, is followed here by that liveliest of Baroque dances, the gigue or jig. Finally, Francesco Manfredini's 12 Concertos op. 3, published at Bologna in 1718, end with this "Christmas Concerto" and a distinctly pastoral "shepherds abiding in the fields" mood in its opening movement. ~ Christopher Headington
